building a Natural Swimming Pool / clay bottom swimming pond
Comments (10)Really neat. I live in Flour Bluff on the east side of Corpus Christi, and I am wanting to build a natural pond in my sandy backyard using clay and then lining the bottom with white rock and limestone. I want to make the pond look like the Comal River in New Braunfels ( a natural spring fed river) and plant it and stock it with plants and fish from the river. I live in a Zone 10A climate (nearly tropical) with an average annual low of about 31F. I have a tropically landscaped backyard, and I think having a natural spring looking pond would be awesome underneath my jungle canopy I am starting to grow in the backyard. I would like to make the pond about 10 - 12 feet long, about 8 ft. wide and about 4. 5 - 5 ft. deep. with a small waterfall and filtration for the fish and aquatic life. I would like to power this with a small solar panel attached to the fence or the roof of the house (where it can get some sunlight). Any suggestions? Thanks, John...See MoreHow Much do People Value a 3-Car Garage House?
Comments (22)When we were considering buying instead of building, we only looked at homes that already had a 3 car garage or had enough room to add one. It was an absolute requirement. The home we moved out have had a two car garage, but only room for one car in it. (The rest? Riding lawn mower, 2 motorcycles, 5 bikes, work bench, tools, freezer) We had several items that were non-negotiable: 3 car garage, 5 bedrooms, basement/other storage space, a workable kitchen. When we built, we built a 3.5 car garage--and it can hold 4 cars if two are small. It appears to be 3 bay from the front, but the rightmost bay goes back quite a ways. The bays are also wider than standard. We keep 3 cars in the garage, and still have room for push lawnmower, a motorcycle, 4 bikes, workbench, tons of tools. The items in the garage all "garage items" (we have other storage in the basement). One of the things that will eventually push into a different house is my husband wanting a 4/5/6 bay garage. (He likes old cars) As others have said, though, it depends on your neighborhood. I was surprised, though, that people would build 5 bedroom homes with a 2 car garage. For storage in general, though, I have found that some of our room sizes could have been smaller because we have so much closet space--the rooms themselves aren't as cluttered....See MoreDoes this add value or not to the house?
Comments (73)Does your fence add value? Absolutely. Probably not as much as the fence cost, as that type is expensive, but it is something buyers will notice and prefer it over something cheaper like chain link. It looks like it is built well and should last a very long time. I like natural color fences, but a white stain would look nice too. It doesn't detract from your home, but it doesn't look quite right either. As others have said, the arbor is top heavy. In the photo Annie posted, the posts are 4x4 like yours and the lintel (or top cross piece) is a 2x8 (double the width) where yours is a 2x12 (triple the width). And the posts are set behind the fence rather than in line with it. Just a suggestion, but I think the easiest fix (and husbands doing the work wouldn't call it easy) would be to double your 4x4's, like this. The posts can be set into the ground, or just attached to the existing posts since they won't show from the front. I like the window inset idea, but it would mean rebuilding most of the fence since the slats support the top rails. You could build your own window out of the same material as the rails, and simply cut out the back slats, or every other slat in the upper part of the gate. I would also extend the bottom rail, just because it looks better. Something like this: Also, it looks like the top is only attached to the posts by nails. I'd suggest bolting the lintels to the posts. If the nails worked loose, that could crash down on someone opening or closing the gate, and two 2x12s are heavy....See Morepost a pic of your home swimming pool...
Comments (27)Unfortunately it is not great for laps. Small and the tanning ledge where you see the two chairs in the water takes up a fair amount of space. But it is wonderful for floating, and excellent for gardening cool downs....weed a bit, jump in, dig a little, jump in. We do not close it for the winter...but shut down the waterfall. The main pump has a freeze protection so that it goes on when the temp goes below 34 degrees. My son went in this weekend and the water temp was 63 degrees...he just went in to help with getting leaves out of the main drain leaf trap. We spend a lot of time scooping leaves all fall! But it is worth it. Thanks for starting this thread...love seeing all the beautiful pools. Judy...See MoreRose L.
