Jade collection to be cosmeticized - advise please (pics)
Comments (3)First, are they grown indoors? The large one looks kind of leggy. I have never seen a jade pruned into this shape. It is kind of interesting. The floppiness of the branches could mean it is not getting enough light. If you like the look of the branches growing down, cut them about four inches past the curve in the branches. If you don't like the curve, cut an inch below the curve and put it in more light so that the branches grow up towards the light. THe green leaves seem to be compact so I don't see how it's not getting enough light. One really cool thing you could do is keep one of the branches that is growing down and cut all of the others off. Put it in a tall bonsai pot for cascade shape. I attached a pic. As for the smaller ones, let them grow. If you really want to fatten up, put them in the ground when your temps are safely above 55 or 60F. I have never heard of leaf pruning fattening up the trunk, but rather reducing leaf size. Pruning back but leaving the lower branches typically fattens a trunk, but you don't really have lower branches. I've also seen people whack them clean to just above the soil. It really is subjective and you have to do what is esthetically pleasing to you. As an aside, what kind of soil do you use? Comments (24)Hey, Denise! ;) I see you've emerged from the Hoya jungle! I was looking around this morning, and I came across this breakdown: Crassula ovata cultivars: Crassula ovata 'Convoluta Gollum' = 'Gollum' Crassula ovata 'Convoluta Hobbit' = 'Hobbit' Crassula ovata 'Coral' or 'Coralle' = 'Gollum' or similar mutation (Form with leaves fushed into coral-like tubes, apices truncate) Crassula ovata 'Dwarf Hobbit' (A listed name. There are both smaller and larger variants of 'Gollum' and 'Hobbit', some not very distinct indeed.) Crassula ovata 'Finger Jade' = 'Gollum' (A listed name. It should be noted that 'Lady Fingers' is a very distinct clone from 'Gollum'. ) Crassula ovata 'Gandalff' (Form with fused leaf, the name being a takeoff on 'Hobbit' . Distinctions not yet reported.) Crassula ovata 'Giant Gollum' ='Green Giant Coral' (As 'Gollum' but larger overall) Crassula ovata 'Gollum' ['Golumn', 'Convulata Gollum', C. x portulacea f. monstrosa] ( Leaves rolled into a tube, usually with one part protecting longer than the other margin. Tips reddish in light. It has nearly 100% tubular leaves and not the number of flat, spoon-shaped and irregular blades - incomplete tubes - of 'Hobbit'. ) Crassula ovata 'Green Giant Coral' = 'Giant Gollum' Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' (With leaves twisted, rolled inward but not tubular as 'Gollum'. It has many spoon-shaped, shovel-shaped and wide open tubes that some have compared to a pita sandwich or gyros) Crassula ovata 'Horn Tree' (A listed name for a fused-leaf plant listed separately from 'Gollum'. Perhaps just a name for large stock of a similar type.) Crassula ovata 'Lady Fingers' (With leaves fused into tubes as 'Gollum' but tubes distinctly narrower, longer, and more upright. It is a more elegant plant from photos.) Crassula ovata 'Sea Coral' = 'Gollum' Crassula x portulacea 'Baby Jade'[C. ovata x C. lactea] (It is smaller than C. ovata on average, eventually a small woody shrub, leaves smaller than C. ovata all green. this name is for the typical clone(s) of the trade. Not all species hybrids will be the same) Crassula x portulacea f. monstrosa = C. ovata 'Gollum' __________________________________________________ Josh...See MoreMy VERY modest succulent collection.
Comments (6)Pennyhal - I only really know the names of my plants because of the helpful people on this website/forum. Everyone here has been very helpful! I've actually just recently started keeping a roster of what exactly I have as far as botanical names. cactusmcharris - I have noticed that plants in the ground do much better than the ones in pots. I actually tried a few of my Graptopetalum Paraguayense in a small pot but after a while I noticed they weren't doing as well as when they were in the ground so I ended up putting them back. I do love dish gardens though. Or maybe I just need to find a sunny area and make a whole succulent garden. Hrm . . . now you got me thinking!...See MorePlease. lets' see JUST your Jade plant pictures and collections.
Comments (90)Excellent! Glad to hear that Crassula arborescens is a more thirsty variety. I am slowly planning landscaping part of my yard with succulents. Before I relandscape, I am in the process of trying out individual specimens to see what fares best in my climate. Sounds like Crassula arborescens might be a good landscape candidate. jonaskragebaer - I have to say, I know very little about Denmark. During your wet summers, how hot is it there? My (admittedly limited) trials with succulents show that it isn't the wet alone, but the wet+heat that does them in. Seems like succulents most hate the combination of high humidity combined with nighttime temps not dropping below 80 degrees F....See Morecactusmcharris, interior BC Z4/5
