Probably a 9' x 12' or 10' x 14' rug would work. You want to have a border around the rug showing some of the floor. I would hold off on buying any more furniture and try to find a rug first. It is much easier to find a chair that matches a rug, than the other way around.

I've done it both ways, bought the rug first and bought the rug last. Buying the rug last was much harder to pull off and I ended up having to have a rug custom made because the color of the chairs I had bought was just impossible to coordinate with.

It depends on how much coverage you want. The usual rule is to have at least part of each piece of furniture, if not all, sitting on the rug. If you were to scoot the chair in the corner closer to the other seating you could then measure that area and come up with an approximate size. If you want to leave that chair in the corner you could elect to just not have it on the rug. For the best appearance you would want to place the rug horizontally, i.e. the short end not facing the TV.

I think an 8 x 10 would work. Lay it out on the floor with newspaper.

Can you post a photo of the space? I'm wondering if rearranging the furniture would help too. Right now you enter right the house into the couch? Maybe there's a way to make the flow better and then you can decide on the best rug size.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I agree I want the rug first, as that will drive my chair fabrics. My sofa is purchased, it is medium dark brown leather, so neutral. I also want to rug down before I bring all the new furniture in, to make it easier.

So this is the living room whith the previous owners stuff. I'm posting because these professional pics are much better than my own! Note, this is not my furniture, but wall color will stay the same.

This is how it is currently. Most of the furniture will be changing.

Only things staying will be:

TV mounted on wall over secretary desk (remove current media cabinet)

Console w wine rack on it

Teal chair near TV

Lamps (once I find the missing shades among the boxes)

Dining table, chairs will be reupholstered

Please don't judge too harshly, I just moved in!

And this is the furniture I'm thinking about. The sofa is purchased (custom so pic is only an example). And I really love the coffee table. But everything else is not set in stone, just ideas of what I like.

My home is a 1923 SoCal Craftsman Bungalow. It's small, 900 sq feet. This is the only indoor sitting area, so I'd like to have as much seating as possible (but no sectional). In my previous home, I never had enough seating. Entry into the living area is definitely the norm, only much larger houses have any type of foyer generally. I love all the windows, but limits furniture placement. My style is vintage/eclectic (is that a thing?). And I love bright cheerful colors.

Your new furniture/tables looks very nice. The thing that bothers me most is that when you walk in the front door from outside, you have to detour around the sofa and coffee table. If that doesn't bother you...that is fine. Maybe someone else can suggest a different arrangement that will let you walk in the front door and go directly through to the dining room. Show us a picture with your new furniture.

erinsean makes a good point. Would it be possible to have the couch under the windows and the TV on the other side?

I think your current rug works well with your choices.

If you think you need a larger rug, how about layering a seagrass rug underneath?

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm definitely going to shop for a 10x14 rug. I googled images of the seagrass layered rugs, not really feeling it, but I appreciate the suggestion.

I also walked into my door a few times as well, I had never really thought about the sofa placement. I don't think flipping it so the sofa is under the couch will work. So much natural light in here, I'd never be able to watch TV during the day w the glare. I also like being able to see outside while I'm on the couch (I have a busy, interesting neighborhood). Should I maybe not get a coffee table, to keep it more open?
