I love the look of the new one and think the colors/design as well as the size would be great in your room.

Funny, but in the pic, the new rug looks darker than the old one to me...and still seems to have some wine color in it....

I like it, but you have to LOVE it. Do you love it?

If you are really going for a whole, fresh new look, I think you'll be disappointed. To me, overall look and feel of this rug looks quite similar to the one you are replacing.

AnnieDeighnaugh said exactly what I'd planned to say. In fact, not only does the rug have wine color in it, but the wine/other dark tones was the first thing about it that jumped out at me.

You didn't say anything about what colors your new chairs were to be. It seems to me that you should work in one of two directions: first, either from an overall color scheme, i.e., SW Blonde walls, a blue (gray?) sofa, and chairs that are X colored, or second, from a spectacular item in the room that drives everything else -- it certainly could be a beautiful rug from which you take the room's other colors. However, IMO that rug is pretty but otherwise not uncommon. Just as important, it conveys a sense of dark, and that seems to be something you don't want.

gosh, my computer screen must be way off if others are seeing dark and wine! It looks soft gold and green to me and is much more muted than the current one; looks like it would blend well with couch and walls and would fade more into the background instead of being dominant like the current one.

I like the CL rug. It seems like it would look nice with the walls. It doesn't look dark and wine on my computer either-

Thank you for all the thoughts and opinions. I don't know if this additional info/pic will help clarify anything for anyone, but here goes anyway.

This picture gives you a better idea of the true colors in the current rug. It's not quite that bright IRL, but I am never able to capture IRL photos with my camera. For example, the table you see just a bit of in the pic is much more red, not orange at all.

I will also add that I have considered going in a completely different direction, as bestyears suggested. I have even thought about simply having a piece of broadloom bound and getting exactly the dimensions I need in that room. I still do have a concern about the larger size of the CL rug compared to the current rug. No one has commented on whether or not they feel the CL rug at 8'8" X 12' would be too large.

I think the direction I'm going with this whole make-over, is to find a rug that works with the sofa because that is DEFINITELY staying. Then, after I have a rug, I'll figure out the chairs. Does that seem like a logical way to approach the "make-over"?

Are you able to take a sofa cushion or arm cover with you to see how they blend with the rug? Maybe even take one of your drapery panels with you? Put some of your paint on a poster board and see how it blends, too?

May I be so bold to ask what the seller is asking for the rug? New, that size goes for about $2799 on the web sites I checked.

If it's a nice bargain, and all of your items that are staying in the room blend with it , I don't think the larger size is a problem from what you show of the room. Have you measured to see where the sides would end up on your floor with a rug that size? I've done that and put about a foot of blue painter's tape on the floor for each side, so I can stand back and see what I think of the size.

If all of the points that I mention work, and you love the rug, I'd get it. I have several Karastans and really like them.

my3dogs - I did take an arm cover with me when I looked at the rug on Sunday. The rug has just a very small amount of the green of the sofa in it.
There was no furniture in the room because she is redecorating and the room it was in had walls that are a similar color to mine.

As far as measuring at home, all I've done is use a tape measure. Putting the painter's tape down is a good idea. I will try that.

She is asking $850 for the rug, which seems reasonable to me, altho I would offer less and see how it goes, should I decide to buy it.

Today I put down some painter's tape, as suggested by my3dogs, to see where the ends of the larger rug I am considering would end up and now I have another concern. Perhaps I should be starting a new thread with this questions, but I thought I'd try here first and see what kind of feedback I get. Here's a picture showing how the rug and the sofa would end up. My concern is adding end tables. If I do that, one side of the end table would be on the rug and one side, off, leaving the table top with a slight tilt.

How have you handled furniture, especially tables, that don't sit all the way on or all the way off of a rug?
