I'd like your opinion on this CL rug for my LR

I'm considering purchasing a new rug for our living room from Craigslist. I went to look at it yesterday and think it will work, but I do have some concerns. First of all, when shopping for the one and only rug we have in our home (the one in the LR I want to replace), I was, of course, able to bring home rugs and try them out. That really isn't a possibility with a CL purchase -- or is it? That really seems like asking a lot from the seller, doesn't it?

Here is my LR (which many of you have see way too many times). I'm trying to brighten up the space and phase out the wine color in the color scheme and that includes getting rid of the plaid chairs. The walls are SW Blonde.

Here is the rug for sale on CL, as shown on Peerless Rugs website. It's prettier IRL.

My other concern is the size. The current rug is kind of an odd size. It is 8' X 9', instead of 8' X 10'. The way I have it in the room right now is with the 9' side in front of the sofa and the 8' dimension running from the sofa to the chairs. It's definitely too skimpy in that direction, but I'm not sure about adding 4' more. The rug I'm looking at is considered a 9' X 12' and measures 8'8" X 12'.

Any thoughts you have on my rug decision would be, as always, greatly appreciated.

I love the look of the new one and think the colors/design as well as the size would be great in your room.

Funny, but in the pic, the new rug looks darker than the old one to me...and still seems to have some wine color in it....

Lovely space. Here are some ideas to consider. Put the sofa where the 2 red chairs are to create a more distinct area between LR and DR. Put the 2 red chairs opposite. See if this helps to balance out the space. I don't like the tone of the red chairs with the fireplace, and think that neutral leather would look nice. They are nice chairs and you might consider them in a bedroom or other room in the house. I also don't think the wood tone of the mantle shelf goes with the fireplace brick. It could be my monitor, but the brick has some pink undertones, the mantle is too orange. I would like to see the mantle stained darker like the curio cabinet. I think an area rug would look nice in the LR. I think adding window treatments would be one of the first things to do, as it would warm up the space, and help bring the 2 windows by the fireplace into proportion in the room. There are also a lot of vertical things going on, and not enough horizontal surfaces to "ground" the space. With the curio, china hutch, and secretary all being the same proportions, I would like to see some console tables or end tables that are more grounding at that midlevel in the space. I think the lighting is fine if you like it. But adding some lamps on consoles or sofa tables would bring some light lower to read in the space. Overall, a nice space.

I was hoping to see a pic of the ottoman in your room because I was so curious how it would work; but I agree with you that it would've obstructed the inlay table which has become a secondary focal point given it's placement in front of the picture window. I think you and I and our DH's are very similar I can just laugh at it. DH thinks I've put too much furniture into my LR and would always cringe if I were to consider another piece. Now, I've moved on to the garden and just planted a bunch of annuals and strawberries in a bed and DH asks me a few days later, "Don't you think you planted them too close?" I do agree, good things come to those who wait. And sometimes you do need to just wait and live in a space to see what (if anything) you need to add. I particularly find that after a party I will know if I need something or need to rearrange a room. I ask myself: Does everyone have a place to sit comfortably? Was the arrangement conducive to conversation? Did everyone have a place to set their drinks? Could we all walk comfortably around the room? Did we have the right lighting for what we wanted to do? Then I also consider how we use the room on a daily basis and are we comfortable there. None of us here on this board know exactly how you use this room. There is always a balance between decor and comfort and while we can suggest items for the former, you and your DH are the best judges of the latter.

You are going to be purchasing a new neutral sofa and leather recliner, right? If so, this rug will go great, even if it is not what you want long-term. Nice pattern, allowing flexibility, since your room is a work-in-progress. Our finances are all different, but I would recommend buying the best neutral furniture you can afford and go forward from there. You will not want to be changing out your large items, but the rug can always be changed later. I think you will be happy with the rug and can make it work as long as you want to - when you find something later, you can probably get your money back by relisting. I actually did the same thing in my DR a couple of years ago. Wanted a nice wool rug, couldn't afford it at the time, found a nice polypropylene (sp?) rug at a thrift store that deals in JCP outlet items, perfect colors, 8 x 11 for $100 new. Is it my forever rug? No, but I am still using it, I like it, not stressing about it, gives my room a completed look for now so that I can move on to other much needed areas of decor. Someday, I will replace it with wool. Tuesday

I have two very good products you can try, Oakley. First, my go to cleaner is a Woolite oxyclean hybrid that works on almost anything. It’s called Woolote instant spot remover with Oxyclean. Spray unril the spot is really wet, wait a few min, rub in and then put a folded towel or microfiber cloth over the spot and put a really heavy book on it (or several books) weighing at least 15 or 20 lbs. Then stand on the book for a minute and leave the whole thing there for a couple of days. Then remove the book(s) and cloth and vacuum because the nap will need that after being smushed so. Honestly that works almost always. The other product I have is an aerosol spray cream called Spot Shot. Try it out on an inconspicuous area. It works a different way. I like the first method best for cleaning /removing stains. But if you have an old stain you’ve already tried to clean the Spot Shot is the one to try. My experience has been that two highly patterned or colored rugs in the same room haven’t worked for me. More pleasing is a combination of one very “loud” rug and one that is quieter, both in pattern and color. Regardless of how big a room is, two very distinctive rugs will suck all the oxygen out of the room—- unless by chance you find two that work so well they transcend that “rule.” I never did! Good luck, rugs are tough. i’ve always used them as the starting point of a design because I either already owned them or was struck by lightning and found one out of the blue without really looking. 😎 ETA both cleaning products available on Amazon.

If you are really going for a whole, fresh new look, I think you'll be disappointed. To me, overall look and feel of this rug looks quite similar to the one you are replacing.

AnnieDeighnaugh said exactly what I'd planned to say. In fact, not only does the rug have wine color in it, but the wine/other dark tones was the first thing about it that jumped out at me.

You didn't say anything about what colors your new chairs were to be. It seems to me that you should work in one of two directions: first, either from an overall color scheme, i.e., SW Blonde walls, a blue (gray?) sofa, and chairs that are X colored, or second, from a spectacular item in the room that drives everything else -- it certainly could be a beautiful rug from which you take the room's other colors. However, IMO that rug is pretty but otherwise not uncommon. Just as important, it conveys a sense of dark, and that seems to be something you don't want.

gosh, my computer screen must be way off if others are seeing dark and wine! It looks soft gold and green to me and is much more muted than the current one; looks like it would blend well with couch and walls and would fade more into the background instead of being dominant like the current one.

I like the CL rug. It seems like it would look nice with the walls. It doesn't look dark and wine on my computer either-

Thank you for all the thoughts and opinions. I don't know if this additional info/pic will help clarify anything for anyone, but here goes anyway.

This picture gives you a better idea of the true colors in the current rug. It's not quite that bright IRL, but I am never able to capture IRL photos with my camera. For example, the table you see just a bit of in the pic is much more red, not orange at all.

And here is a link to the same CL rug from the Macy's site. If you look at it there, you can scroll over it to take a closer look.

I will also add that I have considered going in a completely different direction, as bestyears suggested. I have even thought about simply having a piece of broadloom bound and getting exactly the dimensions I need in that room. I still do have a concern about the larger size of the CL rug compared to the current rug. No one has commented on whether or not they feel the CL rug at 8'8" X 12' would be too large.

I think the direction I'm going with this whole make-over, is to find a rug that works with the sofa because that is DEFINITELY staying. Then, after I have a rug, I'll figure out the chairs. Does that seem like a logical way to approach the "make-over"?

Are you able to take a sofa cushion or arm cover with you to see how they blend with the rug? Maybe even take one of your drapery panels with you? Put some of your paint on a poster board and see how it blends, too?

May I be so bold to ask what the seller is asking for the rug? New, that size goes for about $2799 on the web sites I checked.

If it's a nice bargain, and all of your items that are staying in the room blend with it , I don't think the larger size is a problem from what you show of the room. Have you measured to see where the sides would end up on your floor with a rug that size? I've done that and put about a foot of blue painter's tape on the floor for each side, so I can stand back and see what I think of the size.

If all of the points that I mention work, and you love the rug, I'd get it. I have several Karastans and really like them.

my3dogs - I did take an arm cover with me when I looked at the rug on Sunday. The rug has just a very small amount of the green of the sofa in it.
There was no furniture in the room because she is redecorating and the room it was in had walls that are a similar color to mine.

As far as measuring at home, all I've done is use a tape measure. Putting the painter's tape down is a good idea. I will try that.

She is asking $850 for the rug, which seems reasonable to me, altho I would offer less and see how it goes, should I decide to buy it.

Today I put down some painter's tape, as suggested by my3dogs, to see where the ends of the larger rug I am considering would end up and now I have another concern. Perhaps I should be starting a new thread with this questions, but I thought I'd try here first and see what kind of feedback I get. Here's a picture showing how the rug and the sofa would end up. My concern is adding end tables. If I do that, one side of the end table would be on the rug and one side, off, leaving the table top with a slight tilt.

How have you handled furniture, especially tables, that don't sit all the way on or all the way off of a rug?
