Excellent reference for soil organic matter

At this time of year, there are a lot of questions raised about the organic matter content of the soil, what it does, and how it can be managed. There is also a fantastic amount of misinformation available online. I'd like to recommend this document, The Importance of Soil Organic Matter, http://www.fao.org/docrep/009/a0100e/a0100e.pdf as a great source of information. It is jammed full of detailed data, common-sense recommendations, and mostly lacking in a political agenda. It is one of the very best discussions of growing plants with an eye to cost-effective, environmentally sensitive and high yielding results.

Just a few of the questions you'll find answered:

* How many live organisms are there in various soil types, and what is the range of types?

* Why does composting materials separately, and then adding the finished product to the soil result in greater net carbon in the soil than incorporating the raw materials into the soil?

* How much soil organic matter is lost when the ground is tilled?

* How do different fertilizers and fertilization methods impact the soil?

* How can a soil be transformed to allow cultivation with less water input?
