Tell me, did your stockings have a little bit of a metallic sheen to them? I ask because for one of my formals, a winter Cotillion, my aunt sent me some silvery stockings from NYC to go with my black velvet and white satin short (gasp, it made the older women frown) dress.

I felt so sophisticated, lol. I wish that I did have pictures of those events. I remember them all.

No metallic sheen on my stockings, but they must have looked fabulous with your black velvet and white satin (wow!) dress! I wish you had pictures too, Rhizo!

We didn't have a prom, we had a high school graduation. As far as I know nobody in Newfoundland had proms back then, just graduations.

This was 1984, I graduated from high school (grade 12). As you can see I was still in the awkward teenage years because this is a horrible picture of me! I have more pictures but they're not on my computer and I don't have time to dig them out. The plaque I am holding is for "Graduate of the Year" which I won for high marks and involvement in extracurricular activities.

It was tradition for all the girls to wear long white dresses, mine is satin and my aunt made it. She was an amazing seamstress and cake decorator! Another girl had the exact same dress as me but in a different material (the guys wore tuxedos). We had a fairly small graduating class, 75 of us.

You look beautiful, Casey! Before I read your post I thought perhaps you'd been a debutante. The white dresses and tuxedos must have made your graduation look like a debutante ball! Clearly, your aunt is one of those people who make magic on a sewing machine.

I guess not all that many of us were prom-goers. That's okay . . . think of all the money that was saved. :-)

I went to four proms. Freshman thru Senior year. I have black and while photos some where.

I never heard of a freshman or sophomore prom, Lily, but we probably grew up in different areas. Where I live now, they have semi-formal dances for the first two grades in high school, and less fancy dances for 8th grade. IMO, they're all too LOUD.

Technically back in the day, only juniors and seniors went to the prom. Juniors decorated the gym for the seniors. I went as a freshman and a sophomore because my high school boyfriend was two years older than me, and I was his date. I can only remember three dresses...a powder blue tea length with a net stole, a yellow strapless also with a net stole, and the senior one , a white chiffon with a lace jacket. I looked like a bride...lol And somewhere in this house, I think I still have them.

Where I live you have to be a junior or senior to buy the tickets to the prom, but your date could be older/younger. Does that make sense?

Everyone looks so pretty in your dresses! I didn't go to my junior or senior prom as the guy I was going with went in the service and I had just graduated when he got out. He was 2 years older than me.

I didn't have proms either but both my daughters had junior and senior proms as well as a charity event that freshman and sophomores attended. It was for a local psychiatric hospital and girls and boys had to go as a couple. (To assure higher attendance) Girls asked the boy or visa versa.

For junior prom, both my girls opted to go just with girl friends.

They really enjoyed the hunt for the dress! I set a budget, and actually my favorite was when my oldest bought one on a super sale from Bloomingdales. She and her friend decided to wear flip flops (so we saved on heels) which were undetectable under the long dresses.

I went to 3 proms, all with DH, haha. First dress was a dress my mom made for me for the Christmas chorus concert. It was white shimmery material with gold trim on the neck.

2nd prom was a light blue dress with a cape type thing. It was my bridesmaids dress for my older sisters wedding that our neighbor lady made for all the bridesmaids.

3rd prom was a 2-pc silky orange print with solid light blue striped long skirt, top was a wrap around tie top in the same orange material. Good Lord, too funny, I thought it was just fabulous!!
