Comments (9)I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica about three or four years ago and started on 15 mg of prednisone. The pain was gone almost overnight. I was in such pain I couldn't lift my arm to comb my hair, so for me prednisone was a miracle drug. I didn't have any side effects except increased appetite which I managed to keep under a bit of control, although I did put on a bit of weight, but I think I could have managed that increased appetite better. Since starting on 15 mg I was gradually weaned down to 12.5 mg then 10. When I got down to 5 mg. I decreased it by 1 mg. per month and so on. I went up and down for about a year, whenever I had pain I upped my dose to the previous one. I was on each dose for a month before I dropped the dosage. Now I am finally over my polymyalgia and am down to 1 mg. and as of Dec. 1 will be alternating between 1 and 1/2 mg. My doctor told me it would disappear between 3-5 years and thankfully that is what has happened. Hope the same for you. Don't be afraid to increase or decrease your prednisone, but do it very slowly. The disease will go away eventually. Good luck and keep in touch with us....See MoreAny Experience With Prednisone?
Comments (20)Do your thyroid meds need adjusting? I tend to retain more fluid when my Synthroid needs adjusting. I agree with trailrunner--I am an exercise physiologist, if your BP is that high, you need to not be doing high-intensity exercise because your systolic will go up in order to deliver blood to working muscles, and it might be reaching dangerous levels, especially if you are doing weight training. Yes, a WO does lower your BP post-exercise and it is a chronic adaptation, too. You may want to invest in a BP monitor for home use (they are less than $100 but get the arm vs. wrist cuff) and check it twice a day day after sitting quietly for 5 min. If you have a flex account, you can probably use it for that, but you may need an Rx from your doctor. Do you have a family history of high BP? That is also a factor. Both my parents and at least 3 out of 4 siblings have or high BP so I watch mine frequently. Luckily, I'm good for now, but I realize some day I may need medication though trying to delay it as long as possible. Although like trailrunner said, most high BP is idiopathic, in that it is something that just happens. Do you have access to a pool? When I am feeling bloated, especially after travel where I've been eating restaurant food, I make sure I hit the pool. The osmotic pressure makes me urinate out extra fluid....See MoreAnyone's pet on prednisone or phenobarbitol?
Comments (7)My dog has just started on them. She is a 11 year old Rott. She has been throwing up yellow thick bile just about every morning, for months. At times she throws up throughout the day. She will cough and up it comes. Now right now she is coughing and she threw up alittle while ago. This stuff is very hard to get off the arpet as well, it stains it. The vet said it could be a number of things causing this and wants to do tests that I can't afford. We have tried changing her food, feeding her small amounts and so many diff pills. I even take hard dog food, (responds FP, I think it's called) add water and mush it up so it would be easier for her to digest. He put her on prednisone 10 mg twice a day, for 3 days, which she didn't throw up, just sip a few times. Then once a day, which now she is starting to throw up again. He says she can't be on it for long, that it isn't healthy and can cause other problems. She also is to get an anti acid pill everyday. He said it was a panceas, IBS, acid reflux, the only way to find out is to put a tube down her, into her stomach or to explore surgery. I can't afford that. I am new to the group here so I don't know if I should be posting this some place else?? Thanks for any help you can give me, hope I have explain everything well enough about my dog :)I am lost and don't know what to do for her anymore. She is healthy in every other way, excect, now due to this she is losing weight. She only easts for 4 cups a day and doesn't want to even eat that half the time. I feel so sorry for her. sue...See MorePawprint
