Fertilizing Azaleas

I need some advice on how to fertilize my azaleas and would like to use a fertilizer specifically for acid loving shrubs. I’ve done some research and it seems that Iron is the main ingredient that is increased for this type of fertilizer. I’ve included photos of 2 different brands of fertilizer for acid loving plants (brand name has been cropped off). Which of these fertilizers would be best or is there something different that I should use? Also, how often should I fertilize? Thank you for any advice.

The first one seems better overall. It contains less nitrogen, some of which is slow release. The 30% nitrogen of the second is a HIGH level, and might induce excessive leaf growth. The GYPSUM in the first fertilizer will add calcium without raising soil pH. Once azaleas are established they shouldn't need much fertilizer, and inorganic fertilizers damage mycorrhizal fungi which help plant roots get what they need from the soil. It's better to add a layer of compost, then mulch over that. If you must fertilize do it early; never fertilize after June.

The Azalea Society of America has these RECOMMENDATIONS.

Thank you so much!!!!! I think I'll go with the compost and mulch instead of the fertilizers.

Actually fertilizing a stressed plant is not a good idea. Plants are more vulnerable to pests after they are fertilized. Hence, the Bayer product sounds like a bad idea. The Espoma HollyTone is an excellent product. Fungus on an azalea can be caused by drought, so a pesticide is not always the solution. Let us know the nature of the fungus and we can find a better course of attack.

Have you checked the company's website or called the Help Line? They might be able to tell you what companies in your neighborhood received deliveries of the product. And if you cannot find any more after a while, feel free to switch to Holly-tone, Cottonseed Meal or just a good coating of mulch. That is what we usually recommend because azaleas and rhodies are not heavy feeders and will survive from decomposition of the mulch under them. By the way, you may want tell folks in what state you reside so those who live nearest you can suggest local suppliers. I hope you can find more supplies, Janice! Luis

gee ... i interpreted "bottom of hole" to mean mixed with backfill! i assumed too much :) indeed, roots shouldn't come into contact with chemical fertilizer. i looked-up grass starter fertilizer and it's a blast-o-nitrogen. i like the "new" no-fuss thinking on shrub planting. i used to dig massive holes & backfill with heavily-amended & fertilized soil.

Poor drainage, amended soil, and drip irrigation sure sounds like a "toxic" combination for a plant that needs very very very good drainage. I'd try planting the azaleas on berms or in raised beds. Amendment can be OK when used in raised beds, but you still want to concentrate on providing good drainage and limiting drip irrigation.
