Cleaning and refinishing brass table lamps

User

Touch photos for correct perspective. This system doesn't like my Samsung phone.

Late 50s solid cast brass. I don't think these were ever cleaned beyond dusting.

For the last 10 years they've been out in my garage.

I cut the grease, grime, and cigarette smoke with dishwashing liquid.

Then 2 hrs of rubbing with Barkeepers Friend.

They seem to have had a lacquer finish, see second photo. Some of it is still on there.

I am tempted to say "good enough" and rewire them.

Should I somehow dissolve the lacquer? How?

Should I reapply lacquer now, and assume the new lacquer will even out the finish?

Should I just leave it natural? But then, it will darken?

Is there a better product to use than Barkeepers Friend?

Thanks!
