Comments (6)I clean for a living and I'll tell you the quickest way to clean brass or copper. Providing there is no lacquer coating, just spary the entire thing with Lime A Way. It will turn the color of Rose Gold (Pink.) Wash it with soap and water and dry it off. Then polish with Tarnite. This is not Tarnex. In Chicago you can pick it up at any Ace Hardware Store. Buff it off with a clean dry cloth before the Tarnite dries. It the object is really black with years of build up you can also use The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner or Sno-Bowl. They R both the acid type and not the bleach type. The bleach type won't work. Don't use the toilet cleaner over your sink as it will etch it or turn stainless steel black. Do it into a plastic bucket or over the toilet. If this make U nervous to try this just try it on a few copper pennies. There R no shredded knuckles using this method. Good Luck!...See MoreCleaning Brass
Comments (6)If you're looking for natural products to clean brass and copper, here are two good ones: 1) White vinegar and salt. This works better than vinegar alone. It's a little messy, but it's handy because everyone has these ingredients on hand. 2) Tamarind paste, which you can buy at Indian or Asian grocery stores. Just be sure to buy tamarind paste (also called concentrate), and not the tamarind block (raw tamarind, including fiber and seeds, compressed into a block) or tamarind chutney or sauce, which contain lots of other ingredients. If you're shopping in an Indian store, the Hindi name for tamarind is "imli". I don't remember the name of brand that I buy, but it comes in a plastic jar with a red lid. Any brand will do, though, as long as it's pure tamarind, which is 12% tartaric acid. Thanks to its acidity, tamarind concentrate keeps just about forever at room temperature, even after opening. I prefer using tamarind paste over vinegar and salt because the paste has a better consistency for polishing.
