Planning new laundry room

Greetings all! You have helped me before with advice on getting my sheets back to white, thank you. I was wondering if you had ideas on a laundry room?

Its small, 6.5 wide, and 8.9 feet long. One door on the bottom left wall, along the 6.5 wall, swings in against the wall. My project manager says I can fit the washer and dryer along the back wall, or along the wall on the right.

I need to know this week, 1. the placement of the washer/dryer, and 2. which brand. Rough in for plumbing at the end of the week.

I'd like to max out on storage of course, room for dirty laundry for a family of 5, I think I want a top loader cause I love to soak some of my items.

Everyone here loves Miele and Speed Queen. But only SQ comes in top load. I would wait and see how they handle pinky's warranty claim, though! And that is a BIG laundry room to me! LOL. Why don't you tell us what you use the room for? Do you need hanging space? Do you need a huge soaking sink? Or will at a small one do? Do you need to be able to roll a cart under the counters?

For my purposes, I'd run an L-shaped counter along the right and back walls. If you must have top load, I think I'd center them on that long wall. In my small laundry room, I bought the SQ stack which has a tiny footprint and does have a nice soak function even though it is a FL. It makes the room seem almost spacious, and gives me lots of counter space for sort and fold.

If my warrenty claim is not handled in favor of me than it is because of the dealer, I'm fairly certain Speed Queen will do the right thing, after all they are the ones that include this warrenty with every machine. This is an unusual factory malformation with Speed Queen, I still believe Speed Queen makes the only real TL'er on the market with a warrenty that would put other manufactures out of business, and they do this because Speed Queens are built like tanks and have a reputation for longitivity and workhorse quality. I just want it put out there to research whatever machine you have an

interest in. You won't find very many dissatisified consumers when it comes to the Queen.

Ok, on the powder room. here is a quick very rough idea of something different. It looks like it will be hard to make this into a mud room too. The doors are in the way Could the powder room be made smaller to allow for more mud room space. Anyway here is laundry room rough idea. Maybe others will come up with another plan or improve on mine.As I look at that palatial powder room, maybe the right hand side of it could be borrowed and added to that space near the kitchen door. As it is that whole wall looks unusable for a mud room hook/hanging area because it is part of the walkway to the kitchen. But if you moved the wall down a bit you might be able to fit a wall unit in there beyond the walkway to the kitchen. I noticed on your drawing that you have 24" designated for the W/D each. Are you using Euro sized units? If not you will need more like 30" wide space or more. You will need an inch or 2 on each side to move them in and out for maintenance.

24" depth is a standard size for cabinets, including tall pantry cabinets. Should be an easy fix to make them all the same depth. Talk to the cabinet retailer who is designing the space for you. They probably went deeper to be flush with the countertop ledge, so be aware that if you go 24" deep, the ledge will protrude ~1 1/2".

I agree with apple_pie_order - I'd take a chunk out of that giant master closet and make a little laundry room off the hallway. To minimize loss of closet space in general, you could get stackable machines to save space and build in shelves for linens and stuff. Putting it in the master bath presents a couple problems - first being that anyone who wants to use the machines has to go through the master, the master closet, and the bathroom. That's potentially disruptive and awkward and precludes any house guests from washing their clothes. Second, if you use the tub space for the laundry closet, you block off the only bathroom window.

first, do you really want the wet bar and closet in there to stay? if it was to not be there, more space could be available. If you remove the closet in the laundry room, you can have both side by side. Put a countertop on top (wall mounts will let this be done) or you can stack them in the corner that the closet was. If you stack them you can add narrow cabinets and either had countertops made or cut down stock countertops tot eh narrower width. the shallow cabinets below will give you places for soap and other laundry items, the top will give you a place to put the baskets as well as a place to fold. If you dont need or want either, then if you wanted it side by side, you can do so. and put in a cabinet in what is now a dead space. or still do the above with more room. Also, does the laundry room entrance need to be an exterior door (like if it exists off a garage? If not, use a pocket door, barn door or bifold doors that look like one solid door. T his will free up more room.

Maris..what do you want in a TL'er? A full fill for wash and rinse...true hot tap that isn't dubbed down to warm? I think Speed Queen is the only new machine that still offers this. Just don't take my issue and discredit a grest machine and company. Research.

I don't want a laundry sink. I used to have a front loader, and have been using an old top loader while we remodel ( left here by previuos owners) and I love the ability to stop the cycle and let my white soak. The waters been really hot since it's right next to the water heater, but that will change, I hadn't thought about that.

i like the L idea, very much. I never thought of that. Great idea.

Front loaders can have a soak cycle? Does it work?

Front loaders have a soak cycle, but the temperature may be limited to cold. The cycle on the newer models is only 30 minutes long and drains completely before the wash cycle begins. The amount of water is also much less than a top loader. My experience is with Whirlpool and LG/Kenmore built machines. I usually substitute a short wash or prewash cycle for a soak or use the bathtub for deep water treatment.

I my experience I dont think you need a soakcykle with a fronloader. Do a preewash and then let the program run as normal. With the longer washtimes it cleans very good. I get why MamaP does it because of the short washtime.

If you got something really dirty or stained is just soak it in a bucked just thay item.

Remodeling a laundry room...what fun.

This might not work for you but to save space in my very small LR, I have labeled bins (dark, color, white) in the clothes closets. When we take off dirties, we put them in the appropriate bin. When it's time to wash just bring the bin to the LR, put clothes in washer, take bin back to the appropriate closet.
