Comments (4)I am not clear on your set up. What are you not telling us? I do not understand what âÂÂtank 134.6 hP 111â means. Where is the blue pipe connected to & what temperature is the blue pipe water? It seems to me that for this to operate properly, especially with a mixing valve, that you may need a buffer tank between the solar collector and the active tank. Can you possibly supply us with a detailed schematic including temperatures & flow chart? SR...See MoreSupplement hot water with tankless downstream from tank
Comments (9)Thanks for the responses. klem1 - I should probably clarify: This is basically a blank slate. We currently have an electric tank that should probably be replaced, and the water heater has to be moved anyway. So we do not have a demand system currently. To install a demand system that would be sufficient for the house (3 bath, kitchen, dishwasher) would probably require us to upgrade to a 300A electrical service. Interesting you see it as "tank backs up the demand system" as I see it as the opposite! I am interested why you think it would not save energy. My thought would be to have the demand system set to say 5-10 degrees lower than the tank, so it would in theory not even turn on most of the time except to heat the water that cooled in the pipe between the two I suppose. jake - Good point, might be a good idea to wait until a second heater is demonstrated to be needed....See Morereplacing NG tank hot water heater with tankless
Comments (9)We installed a tankless hot water heater a couple of years ago when our old tank died. It cost more ($2200 maybe with the new gas vent, larger gas line, etc.), but it also has a few advantages. Smaller footprint literally and figuratively, constant hot water as long you want to stand in the shower, and lower utility bill (though not by THAT much). We are empty nesters, so it doesn't get a big workout very often...holidays and such. One disadvantage is the lack of experienced plumbers, even those listed on the company's website! The dealer that installed it went under with the building bust, and I had to pull up the product manual on my laptop and talk through it with the plumber who did my annual filter cleaning. (We have very hard water and I knew it needed cleaning, just didn't want to attempt to disassemble it myself....but I will now that WE learned how to do it.) In this economy, I'll bet more people are opting for saving $$ than going green on this appliance, since the payback time is considerable....See MoreTankless electric hot water heater q's... replacing tank... Comments (21)We installed a gas tankless in 2013. No problems at all. The size & number needed was decided by the company installing our Rinnae brand, which was purchased through Ferguson. Our choice was determined by space considerations. As mentioned, it is helpful to place it close to your kitchen/bathrooms. Our location was not ideal. The size of the gas line had to be increased, adding to the cost. We have no regrets, but moving yours to the garage sounds like a much cheaper option. As previously mentioned, it does not work in a power disruption. It also did not improve the look of the laundry room. There are pipes running above & below. I wish I had known what the finished installation would look like, as I would have changed the placement....See MoreAnnette Holbrook(z7a)
