Comments (44)The bed where most of my hostas are kept is anything but clean, but I still find pill bugs that have climbed the metal stands I bought for many of my hostas to get into the pots. The bed where most of my hostas are is a combination of rotting pecan shells and the result of rotting leaves throughout the fall, winter and early spring. I have eight beds in my yard, this being the largest at approx 25' X 40', so I decided to use the pecan shells in this bed for a different look. I have cedar elms that drop leaves in the fall and lives oaks that drop in the spring, and as the elms slowly start dropping at the end of the summer I have almost nonstop leaf drop for several months a year. I clean them up the best I can after the live oaks finish their drop in the spring but it's futile before that. My yard is 100% covered with trees so it's no small task to keep that under control. I don't even have a spot for rain gauge! That said, this year I have decided to make a change. I will be removing all of the pecan shells and leaves after the oaks stop dropping, which will be in the next two weeks, and replace the entire area with cedar mulch, which is what I use on most of my other beds. That will make it immensely less interesting to the squirrels and the cedar will also not be as attractive to the pill bugs and other critters. I can't say with all certainly what my main menace has been the last couple of years, but I know what my prime suspects are. My first suspect was squirrels, but I had a couple of damaged pips this spring in pots that were covered with bird netting. I have heard lot of people say that pill bugs won't eat your live plants but have also heard plenty of people claim to have seen it first hand. I've also seen pics of the shaved off tops of young growth which people said was caused by pill bugs, and like mine, it only happens when the pips are very small and the ones that are very tender. With my choice of mulch and my southern snowfall of leaves every year you might say I have brought on much of my own misery, but I'm on both the attack and the defense this spring....See MoreWhat are your favorite bath towels/accessories and why?
Comments (26)Karin - the vanity is Dover Woods in a Beluga stain. The Ivory Supreme was found on a wide hunt for Super White - and a granite yard had both, which was very hard to find at the time this spring. We love it, but the stone has fissures and one piece broke during installation, and the replacement slab, even though I approved it, is not quite as beautiful as the original. Soon I will post pix when the bathroom is completed and you will see the other pieces from the original slab. Anyway, back to the towels - I wound up with Fieldcrest Luxury from Target - the colors are great and I think I like the feel of the towels. Tough to tell until a bunch of washes though. Still looking for other accessories.......See MoreOh help please bad color choice (pic heavy)
Comments (36)Yes, definitely try out a bunch of color boards before deciding -- colors are so tricky and can look so different in context as opposed to on the computer screen. Whatever you choose, you will certainly wind up with a gorgeous workspace. I do recommend getting your chosen color made up in Benjamin Moore's Aura paint (they can match any other brand's color exactly) - it goes on so beautifully and is very washable. I'm loving mine in my kitchen, which by the way is an antique yellow that took about 8 tries to get right -- so don't be feeling bad about one little blue goof!! :)...See MorePlease help! Comments (18)You are right about the colors in the inspiration room rug pulling in all the colors of the room. Somehow I either overlooked it or didn't want to admit it. How does the saying go..."sometimes you don't see the forest because the trees are in the way"...haha... Anyway, I just fell in love with the stone medallion rug and was offered it for a great price because it was a return to a local place that makes them. It isn't the colors that I would have chosen, but I was trying to force it to work. It has no grout because it is made with a compouter controled water jet and all the pieces fit tightly together to form one big solid piece. It's really lovely, but you are right, the colors aren't the best for the design. I have changed original design a bit because I felt it was too Tuscan/Mediterranean for the house. I am using more rustic wood instead of so much cast concrete..though I am using the cast corbles that flank the radius ceiling. I wanted it to feel casual and rustic French, but with an elegant touch of "jewelry" that the crystal and possibly some glass tile accents would bring. The color swatch under the sink is such a bad representation of the vanity color! I attached a photo of a premade cabinet in a similar color and style to what I am having made. The wall color has not been determined yet. Any suggestions?! Thanks again! Your advice is really helping me see this from a different prespective. Did I mention I am a bit over my head with this project? This monster spec house has 10 bathrooms and not enough budget! I'll post some pictures as the project progresses....See Morerococogurl
