Can I prune a peach tree with peaches already growing?

Hi there! I have a small/fairly young peach tree in the back yard (northern California) with small peaches already forming on it. I'm not much of a gardener (yet!) but it occurred to me recently that maybe I should prune it because it has lots of branches very close together, and the weight of the newly growing peaches is really pulling it way down. Is it OK to prune even though they are growing? Will that damage the tree or the other peaches? And if I do prune, better to cut off the branch with the growth or ones without? Many thanks!
