kitchen island decorated w/textured wallpaper

I'm not an interior decorator but i'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of wallpapering a small kitchen island (textured wallpaper)...or placed something other than beadboard or wainscoting to the sides of a kitchen island..Mine is Blank and i need to do something w/it...thanks, KLL

I haven't decided what to do with my kitchen island yet...but someone suggested pressed tin to me (Like the kind they used on ceilings). Apparently this now comes in tiles and sheets, and in a variety of colors. I saw some of these tiles at Home Depot and I was surprised that there were traditional and more 'modern' looking patterns available. I'm not sure how it would work out in practice, but I would imagine that it would be easier to clean and maintain and wallpaper, while still giving you an interesting texture to feel :)

Since you said, "...other than beadboard" does that mean you don't wallpaper that looks like beadboard? I've seen that used on the center panels of cabinet doors. You could use anaglypta, with 1/4" thick trim pieces, then paint it all the same color.

Wallpaper works great in kitchens. I wallpapered my previous kitchen and really liked it. It was not a problem to keep clean. I am just finishing up wallpapering my 1/2 bath and it looks so much better than just paint. I'm planning on wallpapering the other baths and I'm looking forward to pickout out paper! If you've been following the design around this threads a lot of them incorporate wallpaper in them. The Jan issue of TOH had a nice article on wallpaper and some fun examples. Sand. Sand, and sand. Begin with a pole sander using #150 grit sandpaper (aluminum oxide grit). That will break open most of the finish. Follow that with a sanding of #180 to smooth it as much as possible. After sanding and dust cleanup, wash the walls with ammonia and hot water solution. Allow it to dry. Inspect. If it's acceptable you can prepare to prime. Use GARDZ to prime and lock down any residual paste. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER PRIMER. GARDZ is your ticket to a satisfactory finish. Allow the GARDZ to dry throughly. You can now apply two finish coats over the GARDZ. Let me know your progress. If you have questions, email me. Michael Here is a link that might be useful: GARDZ

I have not been on this forum for a long time but I had to comment. I just finished taking down a powder room full of wallpaper. I wanted to comment on a product called Gardz, it is made by Zinsser (sp?) It is wonderful for helping fix dry wall. If you get the paper down and have places that need mud and sanding, put this product on the spots before mudding. It seals everything, then mud, sand, and cover the spots again with Gardz. I just totally rolled the whole room with it. It is oil based, so I just threw the roller away. It is thin and milky looking and a little goes a long way. It really helps prepare your walls for paint or wallpaper. When I took down a whole foyer of wallpaper, the walls were so damaged that I had a drywaller skim coat them again. The painter I hired asked what I put on the walls, I told him that I rolled them with Gardz to prepare the new drywall and he said he really likes the product. No I do not sell this product, it is actually hard to find, just trying to help a fellow person taking down that dreaded wallpaper!

Hi KK, i've used both the grasscloth and the textured paper~ one isn't any harder to install than the other. Both are a bit stiffer than other papers, but I did it myself w/both papers. Pros:the textured is really nice w/ the advantage of changing colors. Cons:w/little kids running their little hands over it, after years dirt will collect in the little grooves, and it's almost impossible to get that out. You can't scrub, but you can touch up. Pros:grasscloth is gorgeous and more formal looking than the textured, IMO. Cons:if you have cats, forget it! Oce they find out they can get their little claws into it, you'll have paper that looks like fringe! Again, the little fingers will eventually break down the fibers of the grasscloth, having the same effects as the cats, sorry. So it's kids vs cats!LOL In either case, make darn sure you do the pre-paste on the wall should you ever want to remove the paper. This guarantees(well almost)removing the backing of the paper much easier. Good luck w/your decision. ;o)

Lincrusta will hold up better than anaglypta. It's more durable and it too has some more contemporary patterns.

I have used the textured beadboard wallpaper and really like it for its realistic look. I have wood beadboard in the laundry across the hall from the wallpaper one, and have been impressed that the wallpaper does not look phony to me. However, the wallpaper is easily marred. I repair it the same way I do a wall - spackle and paint, but I would not use any textured wallpaper in a place possibly subject to wear and tear. For example, if the back of the island also has seating and could be hit by swinging feet.
