where to put vanity mirror and what size mirror
Comments (2)I would leave enough room so that when I turned on the faucet I was not at risk of splashing my hands onto the mirror. If the mirror is on a medicine cabinet, be sure the mirror, when opened, clears the faucet handle when "on" If neither one of these issues are pertinent, then I would be sure that there is room above the counter so the bottom edge is not exposed to water. We had a mounted wall to wall mirror above the vanity and it rested on the 4" backsplash. Over a few years the mirror delaminated near the faucet/sink wet area. The mirror would get wet and run down into the bottom space between the mirror and the top of the backsplash. It just got worse and worse over the years and because it was affixed to the wall, there wasn't anything to do but tolerate it until time to do a gut of the room. As far as width, that would be your personal preference. If the mirror is on a cabinet, will the door swing interfere with side lights?...See MoreHow many vanity lights are good for one vanity top and mirror in
Comments (7)Make a scale drawing of your wall set up on graph paper. That way you get to see if the lights overpower the size of the mirror or not. Select something you like to look at. More light is better, IMHO. It is always possible to downsize the wattage and bulb types, but you cannot upsize in any given fixture. In my pre-remodeled bathroom I had 12 globe lights over a 7' vanity. In my post-remodeled bathroom I have 5 on top and sconces on either side, plus recessed ceiling lights. Choosing the type of light bulbs is a whole nother deal. Good luck. What you don't want is shadows, whether you are shaving or applying makeup. -Babka...See MoreBath vanity needs one side light on adjacent wall?
Comments (2)I've decided that the sconce on the side wall is a bad idea because it would reflect in the mirror--painful to my eyes. Looking at Lowe's today the three light fixtures seemed to put out plenty of light. They had CFU bulbs in all of them. I'm thinking now to just mount one of those above the mirrored cabinet over the sink. With another ceiling fixture in the middle of the room, closer to the tub/shower (3 ft away from it per code?) I'm thinking this will be adequate lighting for a 5.5' by 9.75 ft. room. Does this sound okay? Or, do I actually need to learn how to compute footcandles and use those guidelines to decide on my lighting??...See MoreBathroom vanity mirrors; one or two and lighting
Comments (7)Thanks all or your input! I'm going with two. Two is what I originally thought but then fell in love with the PB Astor Double-Width Mirror (a 58" X 40 beveled mirror framed with beveled mitered pieces of mirror). It's the only large mirror that fit the idea I had in my head for how I pictured the space with "one large mirror", but it seems to have been discontinued on PB and there is no duplicate to be found (I even went to a glass store to see if they could make it and they cannot). So two mirrors it is. My base tile that was on backorder (giving me more time to work through all this) gets installed tomorrow so now I just have to figure out/order the lights....either overhead, or sconces that would be squeezed in. There will only be 6" of space next to the right-side mirror so I'm leaning toward overhead....See Moreneedinfo1
