Comments (15)Hmmm ... I just may have to take the plunge with the cornus mas, then ... and Ken, I always plant small trees ... besides being more affordable, I love to watch them grow! What about a cornus mas and an evergreen dogwood? Or, a cornus mas and a forest pansy redbud? Or, a cornus mas and a venus dogwood? Or, a stewartia and a cornus mas? Any better suggestions for a pairing? The part that I didn't tell you is that I had a black walnut tree that I cut down (now that's a messy tree!) and still have two trees that I look forward to cutting down once these two trees take off ... don't know what they are but they have compound leaves and thousands of little white buds they drop and they litter the landscape with little twigs all year long ... messy trees with few redeeming values, including poor fall color (pale yellow)....See MoreCan I plant a Blue Spruce in Zone 9?
Comments (18)We just planted a Blue Spruce, about 18 inches tall deep in the Mojave Desert of Joshua Tree. rich sandy soil of the Chaparral at 3,000 ft,. water rung around it, giving it a gallon a day. Temperatures are iver 100°, humidity under 20%, usually under 10%, 4-5% common. In 2 months we have 2 inches of new blue branch growth (tree is green). This week I will start watering evry 5 days, and letting it go deep (great drainage) forcing deeper roots. It is in a shallow arroyo that dies not ever ”wash out“, and retains deeper moisture. We have 5 native desrt firs that are thriving after 2 years also. The Spruce will be our only non-native…no danger of it becoming ”invasive”. We out thought into it....See MoreBaby blue? Baby blue eyes? Which blue spruce is it?
Comments (5)Difficult to tell for sure. Ive got about 12 baby blue and 2 baby blue eyes, all about that size at present. Of my trees (ymmv), the baby blue are definitely more blue while the baby blue eyes are more silvery (like yours). Ignoring the color, my BBE appear to have that form/branching style. .The best way to tell, however, may be how much you paid. The baby blue tend to be about half the price (or less) of the baby blue eyes, at least here in Ohio (where conifers seem to be noticeably cheaper compared to whenever I see prices mentioned from other parts of country on here). Id say if you paid (full price) $70 or more it is prob BBE. $60 or less, probably BB. I got most of my BB on special (they just picked the worst looking ones and marked em down to 10). I like em both and looking forward to seeing variations in the seed grown BB. The BB are also supposed to be narrower which I like....See Moretrying to fill in space - sky rocket juniper/baby blue eyes spruce
Comments (2)conifers are trees .. they NEVER stop growing ... use the latin name to get an annual growth rate ... and just start multiplying after that ... most size estimates are at 10 years.. and if they are honest.. they are ten times the annual growth ... clay soil are not a problem... its all about how you plant in them.. and how you water for the first few years to get them going.. see link ... bad clay does not allow drainage.. so problems happen ... i had tip blight problems on some types of Js ... i am not sure if sky rocket was of the type ... https://www.google.com/search?q=sky+rocket+juniper&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=juniper+tip+blight ken https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub...See MoreUser
