Recommendations, please ... with sugar on top!

I need recommendations for 2 trees for my small front yard, that meet the following criteria:

1) small (max out at 20 feet or so, but smaller is OK)

2) evergreen, or lower, dense branching if deciduous

3) multi-seasonal interest (flowering, fragrant, bark, etc.), with good fall color

4) not messy (limbs constantly falling, fruit, etc.)

5) like morning sun and late afternoon shade

These trees will be the focal point of my small front yard but will serve the dual purpose of blocking out my across-the-street neighbors.

I have considered evergreen dogwood, star and little gem magnolias, smoke tree, and several maples (including shantung and paperbark), to give you an idea of what I'm looking for.

Your help in getting me over the hump so I can start digging holes and go on to the next of many projects is much appreciated.

how about a plastic xmas tree ...

jeez.. you just want perfection .. lol .. dont we all ...

it would really help if you had told us where you are [z6 is pretty all inclusive] .. soil type issues .. snowload issues if any.. etc ....

and be aware.. but for bigboxstore stock.. tree planting season is actually over for the summer.. in your zone.. the next PROPER planting time would be around the time the leaves fall off the trees ...

===>> perhaps you ought to move on to other projects.. and 'but for' research.. put this on at the top of the list for september ....

i wonder if wifey will go for that logic.. lol ...

6a ... Ozark Mountains of NW Arkansas ... yeah, I'm a perfectionist, but these are important trees, visually and functionally ... and yeah, I should wait, and will, until fall to stick them in the ground, but I want to have the decision made now so I can go ahead and locate the trees and have them ready for planting when I need them after the summer ... so, can you bail me out?

Once we start having days above 80 degrees- and especially having our Santa Ana winds, my peas start turning yellow from the bottom first. The "younger" your pea plants are, the more this warm dry air will affect them. (Older plants can take a little heat.) Two years ago, my fall peas were so good that I decided to plant a "spring" crop in February. But they struggled, turned yellow, then brown - I got some flowers but never any peas. I had to pull them up in April. (They don't last from year to year.) So this year, I just planted twice as many in October. If you are looking for some greenery on your patio, how about a tomato plant or some rosemary. They are both hardy. And if your balcony is protected, the rosemary is perennial. (Sometimes we can even get a tomato to last the winter to here!) hope this helps.

This is a hard question to answer without actually going to the site. But, you should look into the alkaline issue. Because your soil is so alkaline, your plant is unable to take in certain nutrients (elements) that are responsible for making chlorophyll, carotein, xanthophyll, and other pigments used in photosynthesis. These same photosynthetic pigments give the colors in the fall. Green (cholorphyll) is the first to go because it is unstable in cold temperatures. Carotein and others hang in there longer. When the colder temps come, chlorophyll is broken down and not replaced. The other pigments stay in the leaves and continue working. But, a plug forms at the petiole where the leave attaches to the stem trapping those other pigments in the leaves giving the colors. Like I said, high pH soils prevent the tree from taking up some elements like iron that are part of building these pigments. So, with a low volume of pigments, you will have little color; even year around. If my guess is correct, then your tree should be a weaker yellow than what you saw on the tag when you bought it. If I am wrong, hey, you got to read a bit of rambling about plant science. If it is a pH issue, you can add sulfur to the soil to bring down the pH. But, it is not long lasting. You will have to add it often. A little often is better and more useful than a lot once. It will wash away (along with the nitrogn when your husband is watering excessivly). Sometimes too much water can cause many more problems than suffocation of the roots. Contact the extension service up there. http://extn.msu.montana.edu/ These people work for the state and answer questions for free. They do charge for soil tests. My state's extension service charges $14.00 for it. It's not much. But, most of the people you talk to over there have doctorates and specialize in issues just like yours. Lentil Millet Casserole 2 TBLSP butter (or more, can use olive oil or a mix) 1/3 cup raw millet (I guess you could use rice) 2 TBLSP dry lentils, cooked 2/3 cups sliced mushrooms 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 carrot, thinly sliced 1/4 tsp. onion salt (or add 1/2 small onion, diced, to the saute) 1/8 tsp. rosemary 1 tsp. dried parsley (or 1 TBLSP chopped fresh) dash marjoram Saute the raw millet in the butter until each grain is lightly coated. Add 2/3 cup water or broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and summer until the millet is tender ` 30 min. Saute veggies, then add cooked lentils and millet. Turn into an oiled casserole. Top with extra mushroom slices if desired, and dabs of butter. Bake, covered, in a 350 degree oven for up to 30 minutes. Makes 2 servings so double the recipe for a family of 4 Lisa's Rice-Stuffed Acorn Squash 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms 1/4 cup coarsley chopped walnuts 1/4 cup raisins 1 - 1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice Olive oil for cooking mushrooms 4 steamed acorn squash halves Fill squash with stuffing and bake for about 30 min. at 350. My optional additions 1 stalk celery, thinly diced 1 scallion Sunflower seeds instead of walnuts Healthy dashes of tamari Kasha-Cheese Skillet 1 lg. onion, chopped (1 cup) 4 TBLSP butter (or use olive oil) 1 egg, slightly beaten 1 cup med. kasha (buckwheat groats) 2 cups water or vegetable broth 1 tsp. salt or to taste 1 cup cottage cheese 1 cup frozen corn 4 oz. cheddar cheese, shredded (1 cup) 2 or 3 tomatoes cut into wedges, or top with diced sundried tomatoes, rehydrated. Saute onion in butter or oil. Stir egg into kasha, add to onion, stirring constantly until each grain separates. Stir in water or broth (and optional salt) and bring to a boil. Lower heat, cover and cook 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Mix in cottage cheese and corn. Sprinkle with cheddar. Broil until cheese melts. Garnish with tomatoes. Note: I use a big saute pan that I can put in the oven. But if you can't start this dish in an ovenproof pan, transfer to an oiled baking dish after you add the cottage cheese and corn. Elegant Lima Beans 4 cups cooked lima beans 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce 4 oz. shredded swiss cheese, or use greek kasseri cheese if you can get it. 1 cup coarsley chopped walnuts 1/4 tsp. dried basil, crumbled 1 green pepper, diced 3/4 cup water or dry white wine 1/2 tsp. salt (optional) 1/4 tsp. pepper minced parsley for garnish Combine limas, sauce ingredients (tomato sauce, spices, water, green peper). Simmer until thick. Stir in walnuts and cheese. Spoon into 8 cup baking dish. Top with parsley, bake for 30 min at 350 degrees.

I would not clean the counters with vinegar prior to placing the Terro trays. You want to encourage ants to forage onto your counters, not discourage. And a word of warning.....if and when the ants visit the Terro tray, don't touch or move it. Even if they swarm the area in an scary frenzy to get to the bait, just leave it alone. Add another tray if they empty the first one too rapidly. In my experience, Terro worked overnight. After an unnerving swarming of the tray in the bathroom and in the floor of the pantry, I never saw another ant in my home. That event was ten years ago.

Kousa dogwood may be a good fit.

Another tree that I lust after - need a spot for it - is stewartia!

One that I grow that I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooove is Cornus mas. Can be grown in shrub multi-stem form or standard. 4 season interest...fabulous.

If you want conifer suggestions...I would go to the conifer forum (and prepare to be inundated w/ a bazillion options. lol)

Kousa dogwood is definitely an option ... the Venus dogwood looks like it might be a great choice ... Stewartia is an awesome tree but may get too big for my purposes ... Cornus mas makes fruit ... looking for something less "messy" ... as for conifers, they're really not my cup of tea ... as for something evergreen, I think I could stomach a magnolia better, though not crazy about that, either ... evergreen dogwood (cornus augustata) looks promising.

up here in Z5 MI .. i dont really know what would be good for you .... so good luck with that...

but understand.. that trees are usually extremely long lived .... most have a predictable annual growth rate .... once 'est'd' ...

and fully understand.. that they never really stop growing at the rate.. for basically the rest of your life.. and for another lifetime after that..

some do slow down.. but nothing will stop ...

MOST... size estimates are at 10 years .... and by 20.. they have the potential to be twice as big ...

so hoping for something that magically stops at 20 feet.. isnt really going to work..

with the annual growth rate.. its all about how fast it gets to 20 feet.. and how fast it grows past that ...

e.g. if it grows a foot per year .... and you start with a reasonable 3 footer .... its going to take 15 or so years to get near your max ...

if you buy one that grow 3 feet per year... well you can do the math..

so on any recommended tree.. google until you find a growth rate estimate.. and work it out from there..

the final thing.. is to start with a small tree ... they are usually less root stressed at planting .... easier to work with.. and in fact ... a 3 footer will probably get established.. and out grow a 6 foot transplant.. in a given 5 years span after transplant.. its all about transplant shock and getting re-established..

and if you shop in that size range.. the mail order world is at your command.... otherwise.. hoping for something interesting at local nurseries.. is just going to get you the usual ho-hum stuff..

i have been posting pix of extra-ordinary things in the tree... shrub.. and conifer forum.. reach for the stars... i have no clue which of mine will work for you .. but a guy can dream ...

i have an incredible cornus mas but have ZERO mess from the fruit. if i'm lucky enough to even see one before the birds take it...it's still on the tree, not on the ground.

it is a fabulous tree with an amazing shape, shaggy bark, the flower display in march is astounding. it's my fave.

Hmmm ... I just may have to take the plunge with the cornus mas, then ... and Ken, I always plant small trees ... besides being more affordable, I love to watch them grow! What about a cornus mas and an evergreen dogwood? Or, a cornus mas and a forest pansy redbud? Or, a cornus mas and a venus dogwood? Or, a stewartia and a cornus mas? Any better suggestions for a pairing? The part that I didn't tell you is that I had a black walnut tree that I cut down (now that's a messy tree!) and still have two trees that I look forward to cutting down once these two trees take off ... don't know what they are but they have compound leaves and thousands of little white buds they drop and they litter the landscape with little twigs all year long ... messy trees with few redeeming values, including poor fall color (pale yellow).

Stewartia my first thought. There are several species and both: Stewartia pseudocamellia or Stewartia monadelpha would work excellent. Other votes: Lilac (Syringa vulgaris)/Syringa pekinensis/Syringa reticulata, Styrax obassia.

Stewartia is definitely moving up the ladder ... a taller tree on the side of the front yard to anchor things would work best, I think, and this tree might be perfect ... flowers in spring, great fall color, great bark.

Syringa vulgaris ... too common

Syringa pekinensis ... nice structure, nice flowers, nice bark, but no fall color

Syringa reticulata ... same as above but bark not as nice

Styrax obassia ... same as vulgaris, but still no fall color

I'm thinking dogwood on the other tree, which will be in the middle of the yard next to the driveway/carport ... venus, evergreen, and cornus mas at the top of that list.

Other thoughts?

Be mindful of conifers that look different from what you may think of as conifers. I like Baby Blue Eyes Colorado Spruce, which is smaller than the species norm., but what do you think of Boulevard False Cypress (the intact pyramidal ones, not the 'poodle-cut' topiaries)? Neither looks much like a pine tree, especially the Boulevard.

What about a Japanese Maple? I've just started to collect these and they outshine most of my conifers/flowers/trees. One of my favorites so far is Acer shirasawanum Autumn Moon which grows to around 8' in 10 years. The leaves start off green, but within a few weeks change to bright yellows, oranges, and reds. Fall colors throughout the entire growing season, can't beat that! See the link for a pic.

Baby Blue Eyes Colorado Spruce ... nice tree, but slow grower

Boulevard False Cypress ... good tree for the right spot, but lacks "wow" factor

Rhamnus caroliniana ... flowers in spring, good fall color, but berries toxic ... we have two dogs who eat everything

Witch hazel ... awesome flowers when nothing else is blooming, good fall color, but not a "specimen tree"

Acer shirasawanum Autumn Moon ... amazing color, if it is in the sun quite a bit ... good fall color ... maybe too small for my purposes and not enough screening ... perhaps a good choice to put in a large pot on my front patio?
