Wondering about my Aloha

Last year my Aloha had the best blooms it's ever had, they were huge, beautiful and abundant. This year there's about a dozen buds on it, mostly all are in the same area. It does repeat throughout the season, so hopefully there will be more. The bush looks healthy, so I'm not worried, just wondering if climbers sometimes take a rest? I haven't done anything different this year.

I love this climber whenever you show pictures. I just need to go order it now. Lol. No advice from me just wanted to say I love it. Judy

Is the concentration of buds in a more protected & warmer area, like along the brick with light reflecting from the window glass? An azalea growing along the stone foundation here is blooming near the wall, with smaller buds unopened showing around the other sides. Is the tallest stem the first one with buds & blooms? That's often apical dominance, which funnels sugars & such to the topmost leader. The lone bud found here last week was at the tiptop of Aloha at 10' tall. Varies with the weather & the rose's responses, but the entire climber is usually in full luscious bloom all over by mid-May here. Repeats rapidly past frost, with new buds beginning to swell as others are opening, dozens at a time, giving the effect of continuous bloom. Seems you've had an unusually early warm up in your garden, well ahead of mine, and that may be affecting your Aloha right now. Would expect the rest of the branches to break buds as soon as the favored area is satisfied.

Sounds like the nutrients are being depleted. Do you add compost to your veggie3 garden? That is the easiest way to add nutients. I don't grow a lot of veggies and those I do grow I rotate every year so as not to deplete one area. Others who are veggie gardeners will have more info. Penny

You're not obsessing -- this is basic food safety. Do you have something in it? Without some chillable mass, the temperature *will* vary on modern refrigerators. If you have some reasonable content (guessing what is "reasonable", maybe a couple gallons of water/soda or 10# of frozen food) in the fridge and freezer and you're off by more than a degree or two, then one or both of: * Your thermometer is off * Your SubZero needs calibration or other repair You can "help" thermometers register what the "real" temperature is in a modern fridge/freezer by immersing the bulb/sensor in a bottle of water (oil for the freezer) since the air temp can go through some pretty wild swings. In my opinion, you should be able to maintain 34 or, at worst, 35 in the fridge without getting frosty leafy greens or herbs, and -10 to 0 in the freezer. 38 is too warm for my personal taste -- I like to get food *below* 40 as quickly as possible, and keep it there.

" Sometimes, for what ever reason, a rose just isn't a good one." - This is SO TRUE! I got a dud Iceberg last year. It did bloom decently, despite being a breeding ground for black spot from the day it arrived to the day the first frost put it into dormancy. Its canes were thin and limpy and its leaves were scarce. I was sooo disappointed because I had heard nothing but great reviews from people all over the country. I contacted the nursery that sold me the rose (Heirloom roses) and the replacement they sent already looks so much better than the dud! Hopefully it won't breed black spot like the last one did. If it does then I'm not trying again. Try contacting the nursery you bought Midas Touch from and ask them if they'll replace it since it's "failed to thrive". One more thought: do you feed your roses? Maybe Midas Touch needs more nutrients than the other roses and doesn't compete well with them. How much space does it have? My Midas Touch is doing wonderfully and it's only a year old. It isn't very large yet, but it is about the size of my other one-year-old roses. It's own root also, if that makes a difference, with plenty of space to soak up nutrients.

Thanks everyone. Vasue, thanks so much. We did have an early warm up and lots of really cool mornings after that. I do think the weather conditions have had an effect on some of my roses, especially noticeable with Aloha.
