How does one decide which of the several ''closed caption'' ?
Comments (1)See which one you like best ? I played around with those settings here and think the default one is CC1 which was best all around. Some go to top of screen, some spanish too. Different fonts and forground/background colors. You gotta play with them. My neighbor is hard of hearing and eyesight probably not so good - she has hers dead center of the screen, huge white text on black background. Hard to watch the weather....See MoreHow does one negotiate costs with a kitchen remodeler?
Comments (9)Thank you all for your input. I didn't mention this in my original post, and I might have phrased the question poorly. I already have about half a dozen bids, and I'm not really worried about the cost of the appliances, faucets, and flooring. All the contractors I'm working with either has an allowance for them or I'm responsible for buying them separately. Since I can do all the comparison shopping I want for these things, I feel pretty good about that chunk of the project. The challenge is the cabinetry and overall labor. I'm not wedded to a particular brand of cabinetry or working from a specific design. We decided against hiring someone to come up with a design separately. We figured that so many places offered to do them for free, why would we pay to have one drawn up. The result of course is that each kitchen company has their own cabinet line and own design. Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about radically different designs. For the most part, they have the same general layout, but there are certain nuances that are unique to each one. So it's not a situation where I am comparing one kitchen company offering 24 Wellborn cabinets with another company with the same 24 Wellborn cabinets in their design. Right now, we're leaning toward one particular company, because they have a good track record, a nice plan, and we like working with its designer. I get that businesses exist to make money. My goal is not to squeeze every possible dime out of the deal in my favor or to find the cheapest bid. Like so many of you pointed out, making a contractor feel underpaid is one way to ensure he cuts corners. I don't want that. What I am looking for is a way to engage them in this discussion, without them automatically coming back to me to cut scope to lower the price....See MoreHow does one decide to move? Can a house really improve your life?
Comments (54)Bought our first house the first year we were married, it was going to our forever house. Loved our home, we were there 23 years. Unfortunately our neighborhood gradually changed over time and I was not feeling comfortable there anymore. The timing for a move worked for our family. my youngest just graduated high school. The timing for finding a new home for us was not as good, few homes on the market and lots of competition. We ended up in an area we liked, but spent more on the house than we wanted and still did not really get what we were looking to buy. But we had sold our house and had been living with my in-laws for 6 months, it was time to compromise. While this home is very nice and I think some of my friends think I am crazy for wanting to move, I do not view this house as my long term house. It is in a good location. Love the back patio, the big windows, my closet and all the birds. We back up to a ravine with a view of trees and a bit of the city. It is a great home for entertaining. Otherwise it is okay and really I dislike the kitchen, probably half the reason I do not want to stay. Unfortunately this is not correctable without moving the kitchen and I do not love the rest of the house enough to go down that path. Also, not really affordable. But my husband absolutely loves it here, so we are still here. That said we are currently trying to decide if we are going to downsize. This will allow us to buy a bigger home in the desert while keeping a smaller home in our neighborhood. Otherwise we will buy a smaller place in the desert and stay in this house. The third option is the I continue working part-time until we downsize our current home, then we could do both until I decide to retire. My plan had been to retire next year at 62. We were hoping to do a lot of traveling but that is out for the foreseeable future anyway, so continuing to work is not such a bad option for the next few years....See MoreHow does one pick a kitchen sink size?
Comments (11)I'm getting a 36" cooktop and also a single-bowl, 36" sink, not because I needed them to match, but because I cook a lot and I want the room. With the sink, I will have the option of putting a dish rack in the sink instead of on the counter, but I can also have the whole sink when I'm washing large half-sheets or doing other stuff like scouring raw sheep fleece (probably not something you plan to do LOL). My husband talked to the kitchen guy to finalize our plans, and they decided that 36" was "too big" for me, so tried going with a 30" sink. I set them straight. All that said, it depends on how you use the sink. It's a matter of personal preference. Right now I have a double-bowl 29-inch sink and I HATE it. I can't even fit a broiler pan in it. I think most people find 29 or 30 inch sinks perfectly adequate. But if you are a big cook, or a cook who uses big pots and pans, why not go bigger (if you have the counter space)?...See MoreLavender Lass
