Help! Recessed Lights in Small, Low Basement

Our electrician is installing new recessed lights in our basement remodel tomorrow. The ceiling is 7, 6 inches feet high. It's a rowhouse, the area in question is an open living room/kitchen, about 8 feet by 20 feet. We currently have very old 6 inch cans. Our contractor is suggesting we put in 4 inch cans. We'd like to use LED bulbs/modules. So, my question is, do we go with 4 inch cans or stick with 6 inch? If we use 4 inch cans, how many should we use and how far apart should they be? Also, any advice on using LED retrofit modules would be appreciated.

Recessed lighting cans will last very long and the smaller the aperture, the more expensive the material cost. The labor to install the cans will be larger cost component. If there is a cost concern, use the existing 6" can lights

If you are intent on replacing the 6" cans with 4".

About the same number as the 6" cans assuming that they provide sufficient light. The CR 4 and the baseline CR6 (Home Depot) Cree modules have ~ the same output.

Cree modules work well (- good output, dimming performance) and come with an integrated trim ring.

since this is a powder room and not a main bathroom, and you are restricted by ceiling height. I would do recessed, or i would wall/mirror mount two sconces on either side of the sink. a single pendant light could be ok but would only light one side of the face.

Much prefer arc lamps, chandeliers and layered lighting. Nothing worse than recessed lighting. Terrible on your skin and does nothing for your styling.

So I ended up using intense white from BM. It is the dominating color in the rest of our house including the stairway to the basement. I think I could have gone a touch lighter, however there’s no hiding that it is a dark basement so it does it least make it look like living space and not stark, which was my concern about going really white. I had the same question a year ago when we finished our basement to be a gym and sitting area. I settled for a 72" grid ( 72" in each direction from the next light) with 60 watt equivalent LED bulbs. Since my length and width were more than 'x' number of 72" increments, I just divided the overage by 2, and that determined the starting point. IMO, the basement has good light for my use.
