Critical update issued for flash! Ransomware threat.

Adobe has released a critical update for flash, it's highly recommended that you go update all flash on your computers. Remember for flash you must install one for Internet Explorer and a non IE version for the other browsers you use.

Updating Flash is a good idea, panic is unnecessary. Here's a quote from a Reuters article:

"security researchers said the bug was being exploited in "drive-by" attacks that infect computers with ransomware when tainted websites are visited."

The best security tool for any internet user is common sense. If you're careful, go only to legit sites and avoid anything even possibly sketchy, you have nothing to worry about. Don't click on unknown links, don't go to unknown sites, don't download or install unnecessary "free" items. In fact, once your PC is set up with the software you use, there's likely no need to download anything at all. Resist suggestions to do otherwise, whether from friends, in emails. or from other sources.

that is the whole point you use the image program to capture the image before something happens, then should you have any issues with the pc you simply reload the saved image and you are back to the time the image was taken just like a snapshot so you do want to do the occasional image backup so you have somewhat recent images. That way you are not just backing up your documtents and files you are also backing up your entire windows operating system fully updated and all your settings etc. You never want to wait till it is too late to do any type of backup. If you had to do a regular re-install that would mean you would need either your windows cd or the recovery cd that will bring it all the way back to how it was when you bought it which means you would need to do a LOT of updating of the operating system, redo all your settings then go through all your files and data and insert them in. Imaging is the fastest way to go and much easier in the long run. I use my external drive only when I need it I do not leave it connected. It can be left connected if you choose to do it that way. I've had minor problems with the last/current version of Flash Player locking up the browsers and stopping internet for a few moments when on certain webpages. I assume it will be fixed soon as I've notice several others having seemingly identical issues. Its supposed to be more safe than previous versions.. they update it mostly for protecting us from newer threats. If you think you need it .. install it. If you don't miss it.. don't install it. It is interesting Pooh. Based on your post I downloaded and ran the program. At the moment this is still a BETA program, in other words it is being tested by those of us who elect to use it. Once all the kinks are worked out the final product will be available no doubt. On my computer it searched all 3 hard drive partitions and found 10 insecure programs and 4 end of life. However those tagged as end of life will not be removed, these are old programs I use and will continue to take the small risk they might pose. The live link to the right of each entry takes you to the needed update site for that particular program. It is one more program running in the background. Time wil tell if it stays on my computer but it is an interesting program

javara is a very legit and safe program we have used and recommended it for years on the help forums. the old ones can be removed manually but using javara just makes it easy and gets some that you may miss manually. any versions you show other than the latest version can be removed. Java has recently added a feature that is supposed to remove the old version it is replacing but they never put out anything that would remove the versions prior to that so it is not surprising to see some very old versions still listed on older pcs. How I would proceed, do the update from the java icon on the pc, that should provide you with 7-7, then run javara and let it remove all other versions it finds.

The article to which Raven provided a link in her OP states that it is Windows 10 users who are targeted. Of course, it's smart for all OS users to update their programs when updates are released.

From the horses mouth...so to speak. And, if you have Flash set to auto update...it will...for all involved OS...and has done so for this update.

No actually it's windows 10 and earlier, so pretty much all versions and platforms. . Here's the exact words from Adobe.

A critical vulnerability (CVE-2016-1019) exists in Adobe Flash Player 21.0.0.197 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Chrome OS. Successful exploitation could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

Adobe is aware of reports that CVE-2016-1019 is being actively exploited on systems running Windows 10 and earlier with Flash Player version 20.0.0.306 and earlier. A mitigation introduced in Flash Player 21.0.0.182 currently prevents exploitation of this vulnerability, protecting users running Flash Player 21.0.0.182 and later.

Adobe is planning to provide a security update to address this vulnerability as early as April 7. For the latest information, users may monitor the Adobe Product Security Incident Response Team blog.
