Haagen-Dazs Pistachio is back!!

Thank you, Haagen-Dazs! Their wonderful pistachio ice cream was discontinued in 2014 but now it is back. And it's even in my local store. In the past I only found it in Connecticut and used to eat vast quantities when visiting there. Now I can do that at home.

Now, if they would only bring back their Black Walnut! It was sooooooo good, and one of the few still on the market. Sigh.

But I love pistachio, too. Hurray for the green!

And HD's Coconut Pineapple is fab as well. Mango not so much, though - Talenti mango sorbet is so far the best mango we've found.

Kevin loves pistachio, and when I asked him what flavor of ice cream he wanted me to make in my new machine, he asked for that, but it is not one of my favorites, and so I did not make it. Pistachios are easy to find since they are grown here, but they are still a bit expensive. Maybe I will break down and make some - I pretty much never buy ice cream any more, now that I have a machine with a compressor.

I wonder why all the pistachio ice cream recipes have almond extract. Is that an ingredient in the bought version?

I found the HD ingredients: cream, skim milk, sugar, lactose reduced skim milk, corn syrup, egg yolks, salt. roasted pistachios: pistachios, safflower oil.

If I make it, I will omit the salt and probably not use safflower oil - not sure why that is in there. Oh, I see they use safflower oil for roasting the pistachios.

If you are wondering why it was temporarily unavailable, I would attribute that to a shortage of available pistachios. Last season there was a shortage here in California, due to the lack of cold weather where they are grown, which causes the male and female flowers to bloom out of sync.

Oh Robin, you had me at Pensacola. Pensacola Beach is one of my favorite places I've ever been to. We used to go there regularly when I lived in New Orleans. It only took about four hours though. We stayed at the last motel toward the state park. At night we'd go down through the park to the fishing pier and fish and watch the guys shark fish. One of my and Christy's fondest memories is catching fish there with a group of our women friends. None of us had seen this particular fish so this one girl went over to neighbor fishing couple at the pier and asked what the fish was. She came back and told us it was called a Ralpher. Now I've fished quite a bit and admittedly I hadn't fished much in the south at that point but I, nor any of them had heard of ralphers..okkk.. Later on I went over and asked about these ralphers and the guy looked at me really funny and said... they're croakers..lmao. Omg.. the totally common croakers. Poor gal, I'm sure she hasn't lived that one down yet. Croakers we all had heard of, ralphers, not so much. Funny part was they were croaking as we pulled them in. It did sort of sound like they were saying... Ralph...Ralph.. lol.. Go for it Robin. The Gulf is calling you.

I'm smiling here...I have a friend who runs a dairy and he told me (us) once that they sell more Hagen Daz out of the C-stores than anywhere else and wondered why. Turns out it was Mom and Dad who bought the 4 liter pail of cheapo ice cream for the home freezer so the kids could do their thing but once the kids were in bed...Dad was off to the 7-11 for a small Hagen Daz for he and Mom to share as they snuggled on the sofa watching the movie or whatever. But it had to consumed that night, hence the smaller package. Can't let the kids know about Hagen Daz or you are in the poorhouse!

I only bought one container of ice cream at the store this year. It was Breyer's vanilla and was fine for when I made peach melba this summer. But on the route to one of the farmers' markets I frequent, there's a store that makes their own ice cream and occasionally I'll stop in and get a double dip to bring home. They have many seasonal flavors but my favorites are chocolate marshmallow, which in addition to streaks of mashmallow sauce has tiny whole marshmallows in it and their black cherry pictured below, which needs no description.

Ever since I was quite young, if we were getting ice cream cones I would choose mint chocolate chip. That was over fifty years ago and I still do :-) If they don't have mint then I generally get dark chocolate, though from time to time I ty something different. But I always come back to my old favourites. Icecream I get for home is a premium brand we like, since we don't eat a lot. If I'm planning to serve it with something, like fruit or pie, I get vanilla. If I'm getting a flavour, while I prefer their dark chocolate with cherry sauce swirls, DH isn't so fond of it so I more often get coffee with chocolate covered almonds and orange sauce swirls. The cat prefers vanilla :-)

Congrats and enjoy! I too am enjoying rum raisin, that I couldn't find anywhere and thought it was gone, but I am finding it again.
