Kitchenaid KUDE60FXSS vs. Bosch vs. Miele vs. ???
Comments (37)Sorry to hear about the KA issues. I was concerned as well when I got a KUDE70FVSS model in February 2010. The vent is located on the left side of the top edge of the door, next to the controls. It is not on the side of the door. KA's are deep and most will not fit flush under normal depth cabinets I hear. We have about a 1 1/4 inch granite countertop overhang which happens to be about the thickness of the door. So in our case we pushed the DW back until the door was lined up with the cabinet fronts but the door is completely underneath the granite countertop. It actually looks pretty good. (Our old WP was flush mounted with cabinet matching panels installed) We put the moisture strip supplied by KA on the bottom of the granite, for no good reason but figured why not. There is a small strip of cabinet under the granite that forms the top of the cabinet opening for the DW that is, of course, wood. If I put the moisture strip on it, it showed since the strip is a shiny material, so I left it off. I kept an eye on it for months to see what happened and I have never seen any moisture or noticed any steam coming from the vents at all, regardless of the time of day we run the DW. The wood under the granite and all around the DW looks fine and has never shown any sign of getting wet. Not sure what system they are using in this model but apparently it does not suffer from the same problems as the side vent models....See MoreKitchen layout - single sink vs. main sink + prep sink
Comments (21)Green Designs came up with a great plan, as usual. It's very similar to my new kitchen. The aisle between my 9' island with prep sink and the rangetop wall is about 42" counter to counter. Its perfect. I've had much larger aisles and hated them. In fact, that's one of the reasons I reno'd my old kitchen. I'm the sole cook in my kitchen 99% of the time, and I would never, ever, ever give up my prep sink. Ever. I love having a large prep zone with a dedicated water source that I don't have to share with the cleanup zone. I'm usually the one who does the dishes too, but when DH occasionally does that when I'm cooking, he can do it out of my way. This kitchen is my first experience with separate prep and cleanup sinks, but it has changed my cooking habits and way of looking at things in the kitchen. You will not use the sink on the perimeter to prep the way you laid out the space. It's not convenient for daily prep. It is a great place for a cleanup sink. Being over on the side like that, your dirty dishes won't show much. Mine don't. Between the giant single basin cleanup sink and the perimeter location, the few dirty dishes waiting on the counter for the DW don't both my OCDness very much. And as you can see, my kitchen is open or at least semi-open to all the other rooms in the house and to the front door. I much prefer an island being all one height rather than bi-level. Your first inspiration pic island is one height. At one level, you can spread out for large baking/cooking projects and for school, sewing or crafting projects. A large kitchen doesn't have to have wasted space. It just needs to be laid out correctly so you have the right amount of space in the right zones. I agree with everything Holly said. I think you could have a great kitchen here!...See MoreShaws farm sink vs. holes in countertop vs. faucet types...
Comments (11)Every single one of you has given me excellent advice here, thank you! Artemis78 and pinch_me - yes I've been planning/hoping for a wall-mounted faucet, along with the idea of being sure to have enough extra tile to fill it in later should I go the deck-mounted route in the [hopefully distant] future. I asked my contractor and he said it's no big deal to just block off that wall plumbing at a later date and have it re-routed to the deck should I change my mind later. That seems like the best compromise. Now it's just back to trying to find a wall-mounted faucet that has a sprayer option and isn't too obnoxiously large. The 3 options appear to be: the kind that have the external hose that has a wall-mounted cradle (if that's the right word) or hook, but then the hose just dangles in the sink; or the Jaclo Original Steam Valve wall faucet which has the pull-off hose (camouflaged to look at a short distance as if no hose is sitting atop the gooseneck), but the goosenecks are very high - possibly too high; or getting a solid stainless steel wall-mounted faucet (so far it's either Jaclo or Kohler's HiRise brands only, that I can find anyway) and then get the new Kohler independent HiRise side spray that's unfortunately deck-mounted but would match either of those brands nicely cause it too is solid stainless steel in the same offered finishes (brushed or polished). But putting a hole in the deck seems to defeat the purpose. The problem with the Kohler HiRise wall faucet is that it's very plain looking and w/ my intended marble subway tile backsplash, I thought it needed porcelain levers to fit in better. The Jaclo offers GORGEOUS porcelain (as well as cross/wheel) handles in both white and black with a thin silver (stainless) strip on them even. It's an amazing touch - especially the unpredictably attractive black levers. I just gotta determine whether that's just too darn high a gooseneck for my tiny space. At the moment I'm thinking that or else throwing in the towel and getting a single-hole deck-mounted faucet to save money since I'm going so far over budget...now that I know they have hole covers anyway (should I switch to something different, later)! :)...See Morewhich Sink is best prolific vs blanco/quatrus vs franke/peak vs galley
Comments (32)rosaserai - I do love it. It takes another minute to clean due to the ledges. Totally worth it. Hasn't scratched. I use the grates daily for drying. I use the strainer weekly. I use the cutting board mostly when we have company to cut sliced fruit for drinks - it is small and we have a large butcher block for other items. The basin is great for washing fruit - double up the strainer and then drain. Could the angle be a tiny tad more for better draining - maybe. I do have to chase some chunks to get them down the disposal. Could the white on the accessories not stain as much - yes. But a scrub with steel wool has removed all discoloration. Could the cutting board be bigger - yep. But would I get the sink again - ABSOLUTELY. I've had it 4 years and will put the same one in the next house....See Morecece123123
