Organic Rose Growing

Please help ID this rose

Also posted this is "name that rose" but thought I would also try here...

These rose bushes are growing in the yard of a 80yo house just purchased by son. Having trouble id'ing. Seems to be on own root growth. Dame de Coeur maybe? Have no knowledge of the history of this rose. Mild fragrance. Growing in central Texas.

Have no idea if it is a repeat bloomer yet....

those are not white streaks but sunlight. however, the center is faded to pink

Hi Chisos: Here's the info. on Dame de Coeur rose. Since your rose has light fragrance & bushy .. it doesn't fit with Dame's strong scent, huge 6 inch. bloom, and slender hybrid tea. Plus Dame is VERY THORNY.

Your bush looks more like a double-red-knock-out .. popular landscape bush. The below is description of Dame de Coeur:

Bred by Louis Lens (Belgium, 1958).

Class:

Hybrid Tea.

Bloom:

Cherry-red. Strong fragrance. up to 35 petals. Average diameter 6". Very large, full (26-40 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Habit:

Armed with thorns / prickles. Glossy, dark green foliage.
Height of 35" to 47" (90 to 120 cm).

Rose holds up to heat very well. Temps in the 90s and 100s and roses stay put! Vicious thorns!!!

Thank you Straw! I had Dame's at my home in San Antonio that I had purchased from ARE. They were not as thorny as this description implies. And, they were never 6" - probably due to the heat/sun.

The flower in question is approx 4" across with 24-26 petals.

This was my Dame in San Antonio.

I was basing my guess on the fact that it opens to reveal stamens, has light pink bases down deep on the petal, and is a cherry red. I kept mine pruned because they were by the pool.

It looks very much like 'Dr W Van Fleet' or 'New Dawn' to me. They are the same plant, really, except that 'New Dawn' is a re-blooming sport of 'Dr W Van Fleet'. I see thorns in some of the photos, but you didn't mention them- both 'DWVF' and 'ND' are quite thorny, especially on older growth. If you don't have lots of thorns, it's some other rose. So if your rose only blooms in the spring (with many an occasional flower here and there) you'd have 'DWVF', but if your rose keeps blooming, you'd have 'ND'. Otherwise, they are the same. I also do not think it is Dr. Huey. How large are the blooms? Hard to tell from the pics. Can you post a picture of just one bloom next to, say, a quarter? If they are sort of small to medium, the growth pattern and the color would make me guess that it might be a china rose - there are many red china roses. Here is a picture of one of mine, with a closer pic of some blooms. Of course, it also might not. To get a better ID, you might want to try the following: What I would do if it was mine is: 1) Cut off any obviously dead parts. 2) Weed all of the grass or anything else at least 25 inches away from the base of the rose. 3) Put 2 inches of mulch down on the area you weeded. Do not let the mulch touch the rose canes. 4) Water it well, and keep it watered (it will bloom more that way). WAIT for 12 months to see what it does. Does it re-bloom a lot, or not at all? Is it fragrant, or not? Take close up pictures of any hips which might be on it. Take close up pictures of both sides of the leaves, and also the prickles (thorns). Post those pics on here and folks will be better able to give you ideas about an ID. Jackie

So glad you found it. Any time you run across a "peony" style rose, head to the antiques. It's a good starting place. I would never guess it could possibly date back to the 13th century, middle east! A treasure for sure.

Paul, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Even though I don't have a dog in this fight, it's great when I learn something new. Who knows, I might come across a maybe-Banshee someday, and thanks to this tidbit I'll recognize it. By the way, both DR and AJ have buds! We're having a heat wave, so no telling how the colors will hold up, but I'm an anxious papa and can't wait to see them. I have them hidden from the deer, by the way, lol. Ain't gonna serve dessert to the hooved plague if I can help it! John

What a beautiful rose Dame de Coure is.... first photo is absolutely stunning. I wish I could help but nothing clicks my mind. The bush however doesn't look that old..

Chisos: Absolutely gorgeous garden you have in San Antonio. Based on the low-petal count, 24, and little scent & smaller leaves ... it looks like a landscape bush but your bush has MORE petals than Double-Knock-out. The only light-fragrant, disease-resistant rose match that is Olympiad rose, 5" diameter, with 32 petals .. but would be less in high heat. see below:

A truly beautiful red rose...(and needless to say not available here), and such a lovely name, - translates to: Dame de Coure: Lady of Heart (ps. this was a 'google search')

It could it be a red China. Do the blooms shatter, all the petals fall, soon after picked? Does it have a scent but is not hybrid tea nor old Rose, but more fruity? If the answers to these questions is yes, then I would think perhaps China, maybe Louis Philippe.
