Need suggestions for caladium companions..
Comments (10)yeah- what brenda said, basically. i have a wooden planter on my porch that i can squeeze 6 or 8 3 gallon pots in side by side and keep the caladiums in those. They go in for summer, and i have a separate set that i plant with pansies or lettuces, etc that i use for winter. So mine aren't going in the ground, but there's no reason why you couldn't sink pots in the ground or use decorative ones and leave them above ground. i do plant a few in the ground each year, but am not as good at preserving those bulbs. Oh, i dig them, they just never make it into a bag with some barely moist peat and where they are happy in the basement, so i usually kill them with neglect. If it's not easy, i'm not likely to succeed with it. I've tried just throwing them on the surface of the other pots, but the cold gets them that way. The peat or sawdust insulates them just a little- enough. The ones in the pots almost always come back bigger & better each year....See MoreCompanion planting suggestions
Comments (10)Morning Dove is lovely Beverly, but if I'm not mistaken it appears somewhat similar to Sleeping Beauty, which is also in this bed. After giving thought to the size issue (thank you ConnieMay!), I think the way to go is to move FW to a NW bed (hopefully she'll be slow to wake up and avoid frostbite) and move my Autumn Frost to that spot. AF is a medium and I think will offer just enough contrast with the AH to make things interesting. Plus the AH is a good size and will eventually cover that window well. I appreciate the help!...See MoreNeed companion ideas for weeping 'Viridis' JM.
Comments (0)I just bought a 'Viridis' Japanese maple from a local nursery. The tree is about 4 feet tall. I plan to plant it on the high side of a small rock retaining wall, the retaining wall is only 18"-24" high. I need some companion plants that I could plant under the 'Viridis' along the front of the rock retaining wall. Eventually, the 'Viridis' will weep over and down the small rock retaining wall. But until then, I'm looking for some plants to fill this area for a few years. Any ideas? This is located on the North side of the house, so it only gets morning sun, then shade for the rest of the day. any ideas?...See MoreNeed suggestions for placement of JM
Comments (1)Japanese Maples are native to the monsoon-drenched, hillsides and slopes of Asia. They like: WATER: Frequent, average to slightly above-average water requirements SOIL: Quick-draining, acidic, fertility not terribly important (but drainage is) SUN: A half-day of sun, tops, for a red-leaf (they are going to be prone to leaf burn and drying out no matter what you do). You're right, morning sun-afternoon shade would be better, and I believe the ideal sun exposure for a red is 4-5 hours in the summer WIND: They prefer to be in wind shadows--try to see that they are shielded from the two directions where you get the most wind. The branches are delicate (ice storms in your part of the US can be a definite problem)...See MoreEric
