Tip for Newys: How do I fix this leggy mess?!

J Stumbles

I have one of my plants who was rescued from a shady spot in a friend office about a month ago. After a slow and steady acclimation to the new lighting of my southern windows sill, this poor fella hasn't even perked up.

The last succulent that I tried to trim and replant failed. I snipped an inch of stem below a three inch round rosette and it shriveled and died in almost two days when I left it to callous! Is snipping the only way to save this fella? Could I pull off the weak leaves and bury the stem further in the pot? I don't want to lose this cute with such strong growth on the top.
