Dripping at connections

Ok, I have a very stupid question. I want to set up for my vegetable garden a simple drip irrigation system. I would connect a timer to the outdoor faucet and keep the faucet turned on with just enough pressure to make it to the end of my drip set up. Then a 25 ft hose is connected to the timer so that the drip starts at the garden. I have 75 feet of drippers in the vegetable patch.

However, even changing washers every year, it always drips. I can't do what I want if I can't keep the faucet turned on. Do I need to get a wrench and really screw it on tight? I've already got it as tight as I can by hand. I'm concerned that my 50 year old faucet might not like excessive pressure.

Should I try plumbers tape? Never used it - any con's?
