What to fill the bottom of large pots with to take up some room
Comments (39)Thanks for the kind words. The best way to decrease the amount of medium it takes to fill a pot; and, to limit the volume of excess/ perched water a planting can hold is by using ballast. Note (fig D) how much less excess water a planting can hold when using an overturned pot as ballast. The figure on the right below illustrates how you can use brick or hollow plastic blocks as ballast. If you were to turn the bricks on edge and add 2 more, you would almost entirely eliminate this planting's ability to hold excess/ perched water. Make note though, that there must be at least 1 continuous/ unbroken soil column from the top of the soil column to the pot bottom. If the bricks were turned 90* and 2 more added such that the bricks or other material filled the pot bottom so that there was a 2"x2" gap between the bricks to provide the unbroken soil column I mentioned, the only grow medium in the entire planting capable of holding perched water would be the medium in the 2 x 2 space between the bricks. Comments (4)Cool, I filled a bowl with warm h2o and dunked it a few times and worked off the rest with a fork as korina suggested in another thread. I was able to get at least 90% of the peat off and hardly ruined any of the roots. I even put a wick on that plant! Thanks, I'll throw the plant in my empty 5.5 gallon aquarium that I use for starting various cutings. I laid down two leaves of each plant the day I purchased them. Those leaves are in a recycled container from my B-day cake! Come spring I'm going to be cramped with my veggie seedlings. These new plants sure help the winter blues, if you know what I mean. My new arrivals are sure going to like my old 10g that was previously setup as a terrarium for some dwarf ferns and some fittonia. Before that it was a fish tank with various aquatic plants. I did the hood myself and built the light system with parts gathered from HD's lighting section. When all else fails diy! Thanks for all your help. Rick. P.S. I'll let you know how the wicks work out....See MoreKeep small ones potted or plant them out?
Comments (1)arbo_retum, I would keep yours in a pot as it's really to small to put it into the ground. Do you know which variety/species you have? As we know some do not like to have their roots disturbed. I'm also to the point where I would rather see a brugmansia in a smaller pot than a huge one when one needs to move them inside during the winter months. If one puts the brugmansia into the ground one should know where your water table is at. We have found here with the higher water table that we are now seeing it can kill a brug faster than anything having it wet all the time....See MoreFinally ready to post some pics of my new garden (lots of them)
Comments (20)Thanks again, especially for the candytuft ID, they are the stars of the spiral right now but they're starting to go to seed. I have a fountain in the front yard, and although I agree it would look great I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle in that particular spot. Birds love fountains, consequently they need to be cleaned frequently and it always involves splashing a lot of water on the ground and walking around the fountain a bit. Maybe I could get a birdbath and hook it to the irrigation system, but a statue would be easier and require less maintenance. I think I'm a one fountain person, a second is not something I relish taking care of but I wouldn't dream of getting rid of the one I have. Most recently a bench has been added to the garden, I realized that the place where the path brushes the raised bed is the coolest and most comfortable spot to hang out so I mentioned it to the DH and next thing I knew we had a new bench. I love it, it's perfect for sitting and enjoying my new area....See Moreewwmayo
