Please help me figure out what to plant here! (Pictures)
Comments (3)try some Hostas and Heuchera both have some very nice foliage. Also if there is sufficient sun you can plant day lilies they have tons of color so you don't have to worry about the plain old orange. all three sugestions go up to at least a zone 3(me!:) and I know of some that are in zone 1 and 2. if you are dealing with a shade type area go to the Hosta forum there are way more suggestions for different shade tolerant plants they are nice there will suggest some flowers too. There are almost too many options to list you should probably let people know your zone so they can suggest ones to fit your zone better. If all else fails plant some high bush or low bush blueberries they love acidic soils here in Maine it's one of the most thriving plants with all theses pines! :) Good Luck! Comments (4)Since none of the pros have piped up with their precise secret formulas, here's how I'd swag it: -Bathroom is about 16' x 10', so order 160 square feet of the floor tile. Yeah, the tile goes a little further than 16' in the toilet room, but I didn't subtract the shower or tub footprint, so those offset it, plus eat up the off cuts. -Shower walls: looks like you've got 2 that are about 5x8 and 2 that are ~2x8 (assume 8 foot ceilings), so that's 112 square feet for them. Not subtracting the area for the accent strip will cover off-cuts. -Shower floor and ceiling: Two ~5x5 spaces, so you need 50 square feet. The square is cut off on the door side, reducing the need, but keep it in to cover off-cuts. -Accent strip: 16" wide x 14 feet of wall length = 19 feet. I'd round up on this. -Deco tiles: You've got 1 every 5.5", over 14 feet, which is 30 tiles. Get a couple extra in case you break one. And on everything, round up the nearest box size....See MorePlease help me figure this out! Is it worth making a 3rd BR?
Comments (23)Thanks arielitas_mom! yes,my plan is to make a nice, big, luxurious tiled shower along the same wall that the corner shower is now. Probably about 39" w x 6 feet long (unless that's TOO long...). I do feel like this is a compromise, since a 3BR/2BA (and lts face it, most people will use it as 2BR/2BA/office) feels like it's step down, as far as the target market, from the 3BR/3BA/office we'd planned when we bought it. But it's good to hear some positive feedback from you folks about the compromise, because it really would stretch us too far to do the addition. Thank you! So what do you all think about the fact that there's no proper dining room? The DR area is really more of a dining "nook" and there's no place to put a really big dining table. ?????...See MoreVery new to FL, need help figuring out a garden protected from pests.
Comments (15)Something that helps me is to have a backbone of plants that get aphids but are not adversely affected by them. That way you have a constant "backlog" of predatory bugs ready to pounce when other things get infected. In my yard this is the attractive ever-blooming FL native firebush shrub which hosts a lot of lacewings and ladybugs, I have never seen the specific aphid species that likes it move to my veggies but this might be chance. Also I have tons and tons of predatory and parasitic wasps that are brought in by my many pollinator-friendly flowers. Flowers good for this in FL are: Lantana (VERY easy to root via cuttings, I do it without hormone in about a week) Porterweed (do not grow in South FL if u do not have native species) Butterfly bush (fragrant and easy. I prefer large old-fashioned ones like Black Knight and White Profusion because they choke out weeds/fend for themselves) Blanketflower Zinnia (cheap and easy to grow from seed, you probably are familiar with them. My favorite is the heirloom 'Envy'.) Gaura (long-lived perennial native to Southern USA. interesting flower shapes) Pentas (tolerates more shade than others on this list, available basically everywhere in FL for a reason) All of those have very long bloom times (porterweed and lantana are ever blooming if there's no frost). Winter cassia, Chaste tree, Purple coneflower, Flatwoods plum are also great but their bloom times aren't quite as long. You might also want to experiment with "sacrificial plants". I've only had lubbers once but they only ate my sweet potato vine (grows like a weed so I don't care) and my zinnias, perhaps they prefer them over the others? Might be worth testing. But that's just me/my view. I don't like spraying and also I don't have the time to spray, I work and go to college. I'll let the bugs eat each other instead LOL Other than that raised beds definitely helped when I grew tomatoes. Peppers in my experience are basically pest-free, they're just heavy feeders is all. Also they perform best in protected/partial sun for me. Epsom salt is good against slugs if those become a problem after heavy rain. It's literally magnesium so it doesn't hurt plants and personally my FL soil is deficient in the mineral so plants appreciate it. My last tip: don't bother growing squash. Hope that helps and best of luck...See MoreDenise
