Help picking some roses for my Mom
Comments (14)what color do you want for her, Aprille? I second Perle d'Or also; it is a great rose! You might try looking at the Chamblees rose site at the Earthkind roses they have for sale. They are in Tyler, east of Dallas. Other ones I grow here in north Alabama that are Earthkind that I really like are Ducher and Spice. I love both these roses and think they'd be good in McKinney also. I understand there is a demonstration garden up north of Mckinney now; I wish she could go and see what they have, but don't know about the hours, etc. Good luck, Aprille! Comments (16)I think idixierose - meant Blossomtime :-) - another lovely climbing rose that is both beautiful and sweetly fragrant - and have a lighter coloured petal reverse - but flowers are much more delicate and leaves are smaller more "Wichuraiana-like" and more matt - than those on Aloha. "what is the definitive way to know"? Growing the rose for years - and seeing it up close and personal in your garden (presuming you dont grow a mislabeled rose - and ruling that out by seeing it in many other gardens. Over the years you become familiar with certain popular rose cultivars - like Aloha, Coral Dawn, and Blossomtime and know them - like you know your children. Their differences, strengths and weaknesses - every little detail :-) And like with people -you see the good sides and try to overlook their bad sides. With more rare - old garden roses - it may take longer to identy them - and often it may only be possible to identy the class of rose - and they will remain "unknown" or you grow them under "study names" and let other experienced rose friends see them and try to identify them. Having access to very, very large rose collections in Royal Gardens, 2 big Rose nurseries nearby and parks and botanical gardens with thousands of roses - travelling to rosariums in many different countries and parts of the world - makes a lifetime study of roses possible. But sometimes - you just don't know :-) - and humbly accepts that you can not know everything....See MoreRoses at my Mom's house
Comments (5)Thanks, and you're welcome! I'm really enjoying exploring the world of rare and antique roses, the patio area at my mom's house is filled with different fragrances now and it's wonderful. Every day I wander around like a bee, sticking my nose into all the flowers. Is it just me, or does Marchessa Boccella have a sort of baby powder type fragrance? It is interesting but very different... Glenora from Portland is wonderfully fragrant, but I also love the look of the foliage. And the Marchioness of Lorne is one of my all time favorite names for a rose, in my opinion it's right up there with White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth. Anyways, thanks for looking and commenting, I'll keep posting as I get more blooms on my new roses. Have a good day!...See MoreOld Rose Golden Ophelia
Comments (2)Sequoia lists it on their availability list: http://www.sequoianursery.biz/supplemental.html The Uncommon Rose lists it, but says it is unavailable right now. You can enter your e-mail address and they will e-mail you when it is ready. They ship roses as bands, which are very small, own root roses. http://uncommonrose.biz/r/goldenophelia.html It is a very pretty rose in the photos. I can see why you want it. Good luck in finding it and I hope it brings your mother some joy. Here is a link that might be useful: Sequoia Nursery...See MorePrettypetals_GA_7-8
