Anybody have opinions on chiropractors? Helpful? Thanks!

Well, some are good & some not. I went to 1 that dad had gone to, he was great at 1st, tho my headaches weren't any better but then he was on phone all the time as going into another profession. So we both quit him. I tried a couple more, felt good when they worked on me most of time but didn't improve migraines so quit. Dad would get close to 1 inch difference as 1 leg would be shorter when "leg went out" so they were great at getting him back to normal. Ask around & try to find 1 folks are happy with, I like 1 that had a firm hand but not rough & if I hurt worse each time I would quit. Some use heat & other things so ask about that also. Good Luck!

emagineer, I have seen my primary doctor...he dismissed me as being too young and said maybe there is some arthritis back there. Can't say he's very helpful, or worth the money...but I have an extensive medical background that he is familiar with. It's hard for me to change but I've begun thinking maybe I should...he just always tells me not to worry because I'm young...then I go to specialists and find out my spine is wrong, my jaw is dislocated on both sides, I have inexplicable respiratory issues and the worlds worst case of born-with-it acid reflux (and I wonder why I've been so uncomfortable for years!). Ugh, had to vent...I have had such a long list of health problems over my lifetime it's easy to get discouraged, but I try to remember others who struggle with life-threatening diseases and remember how blessed I am. I guess I will pursue the necessary avenues to figure out what's up. the last two days I have had a lot of pressure right where the neck meets the head in the back, with headaches that are really concerning me. I'm going to see the chiro tomorrow since I can get into see him immediately and get my x-rays sent to my uncle who is a physical therapist. I'll look for a neck/bone doctor and maybe a neurologist this week to get some more opinions. It's hard because some people SWEAR by chiropractors and it's a very studied and reportedly safe science, but other people (including my family at large) are super suspicious, I guess I am too...but the one I have been seeing has demonstrated enormous concern and knowledge so I do trust him and like him quite a bit. We have his cell number and my DH called him this Sunday afternoon out of concern and he spent quite a bit of time asking me questions to make sure it's nothing serious. I think the cause of all of this is an accident I had in college. Basically just a really badly executed somersault attempt that gave me some loud noises and neck pain for a while afterwards, of course I never had it looked at until now. So thankfully it doesn't seem to be caused by any natural deterioration other than that.

First, Alisande I believe if you look on the back of your Medicare EOB you will find the information about APPEALING their denial of coverage. It should be there .... somewhere. Denials are always appealable, usually there are 2 levels of appeal. So, exercise your RIGHT TO APPEAL. Write a letter & explain your situation. If that fails, enlist your chiro to write an appeal for a second review. Medicare doesn't "think". They have guidelines for coverage. A low level clerk of a computer program screens outs targeted types of claims that have traditionally been abused. That system isn't perfect. But if you don't appeal something that is legitimate, or *possibly* legitimate, they have no way of knowing that they've snagged something in error. The error could even be in how the diagnosis &/or treatment was coded on the bill by the chiro's staff. Chiro has its place & can be a helpful adjunct for treatment. But it does have quite a history of "hocus-pocus" & of duping people &/or insurance/Medicare. I am aware that there are those "lonely sorts" who ... truth be known... use a chiro visit as somewhat of a social outlet. Why should Medicare or insurance pay for clearly unnecessary treatments. Preventive chiro generally isn't in the same league as preventative in traditional medicine. I guess we can look forward to more of same as the government inserts itself even further into our healthcare delivery system. Gibby, I don't understand your statement. At.all. Medicare IS & has ALWAYS been a gov't run healthcare system. I want my tax $ spent as wisely as possible. If there is fraud/abuse, weed it out. And of course, they certainly can't afford to cover absolutely everything on the healthcare menu.

Chisue, I'm surprised to hear you think those of us who have been helped by chiropractic are all delusional. I know of no scientific evidence that chiropractic is any more *curative* than massage. Of course you don't. Why would you? Why would anybody, unless they were interested in the topic and had a desire to learn more about it. How does the placebo effect come into play if one receives a bad treatment? Years ago I went to a Dr. C. when my chiropractor was on vacation. I fully expected to have a good and helpful treatment since he had been recommended by my chiro. According to what I know about the placebo effect, if that's what was at work it should have carried me through to a good outcome. But the outcome was that I had to spend more than a week in bed afterward. Oh, and Snidely........ In medicine new treatments are tried, if they don't work or lead to undesirable side effects, they're discontinued and the process continues with other ideas. It's trial and error and critical assessment to improve care. So now you're saying that the "rigorous" testing you referred to in your previous post includes using unsuspecting patients as guinea pigs? That's just great. Not sure how I ended up being the champion of chiropractors in this thread. I must be inspired by all the help I received from one this month.

My FIL who just passed last week(2 days before his 95th BD!) used to take Neurosurgery payments in food, home made fishing poles and all sorts of bartering just after the depression! My hubby had to have serious dental stuff done, and the dentist accepted several thousand $ of DH's hand carved furniture! It sure took some $$$ off of our shoulders!

As stated there are good and bad doctors. The first one I went to actually "hurt" me. Then couple years later had an injury was reluctant to go again. My dear friend told me bout hers. I went to see him ...WOW what a blessing he is. He was able to really help me. Not only at that time but still go to him every couple months for realignment.

It's weird but I didn't realize how out of line I was till he fixed it. You live with pain etc so long it feels normal.

So moral of story is to ask around. Go online etc for reviews of docs in your area. If not satisfied with first doc don't let that deter you. Find another.

Just my humble opinion.

I have had varying experience also. One 'adjusted' my upper back and gave me a problem in an area that I'd not had before -- took some time to get over. Another actually did help with some chronic neck pain, but I found that his "treatment plan" was based as much on what my insurance would pay than on what I needed. And, I couldn't see a bit of difference in the before and after xrays despite being assured that there was significant improvement (and I have some experience at looking at xrays, although not trained to read them). I understood and believed the reason his treatment helped, but he stuck to the same old sales script that is used on all his customers!

I agree that as we age and use some muscles more than others, we can get out of balance and alignment to some degree. Spondylolisthesis, for example, and I think a GOOD chiro can help.

I steer clear of any that claim to be able to treat allergies, thyroid, depression, ADHD etc. or that sell certain kinds of "supplements".

My husband and I see a chiropractor, we're pleased with the results. He doesn't claim to be able to cure everything nor does he try to sell us stuff.

Ditto on what others have said.
We've found the ones that seem to be a red flag:

- NEED to use their electric measuring device to evaluate your spine before ANY treatment

- suggest you sign up for a 'plan' that has you going yearly 'just for preventative maintenance'

- crack your back immediately upon checking in, without first speaking to you in depth about how you feel.

In comparison, the one we go to and appreciate:

- asks how you are doing, evaluates the area of pain

- is trained in ART (Active Release Technique, basically a type of myofascial release)

- are able to diagnose the pain and its cause by looking, gentle touching, etc.

My neck goes out occasionally, causing headaches when I look up. Hubby has a rib that goes out. Chiro is able to fix both quickly and easily.

very effective and beneficial in my experience and that of many people I know. As said, though, not all are skilled equally
