Anyone growing epimedium?
Comments (3)Topsie, I'm also in USDA zone 7, in coastal New Jersey, and several epimediums have been doing very well for years in the sandy soil of my shady garden. (To explain my presence: I stopped in on this forum to try to get a handle on AL gardening, since my daughter just moved to the Birmingham area.) Comments (1)I have this popping up in all the shady places. When moving into my home the yard had nothing all around the perimeter and under the trees. There were signs of a wonderful garden at one time, but previous owners must have used weed killer on everything except the grass. And thankfully the flowering bushes, vines and trees are still growing beautifully. Every spring/summer something does start showing up again. This plant is one of them. It doesn't care if it is under an old pine tree, where I built the shed, poking up through rocks and not getting water. I don't know what variety it is, but they all create heavy root systems which is why this plant is growing again. Considering the growth habits, am not sure why they would be expensive as someone is probably trying to get rid of them constantly. I am also looking at planting ajuga varieties in my dry shade areas. It seems to have the same growth habits....See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il

See what I mean about the textural contrast Sherry. I have never seen an Epimedium I did not like. The flowering time is short so they are for those of us who can truly appreciate the value of foliage - and that would be everyone here!
I only have two but want many more. It is difficult to pick a favorite because both have interesting qualities.
Here is Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum' in spring. There are Hostas behind and to the side. It loses the reddish blush for the summer but with the slightest cool night starts to return.
Here it is in late Nov. It grows quite happily under a huge sugar Maple. I was sure I had a pic after raking the area but could not find it.
This pic is from a few years ago. This one (sent misnamed) is likely a named variety of Epimedium grandiflorum. This pic was taken more for the Hosta 'El Nino' as this E. is not at its peak of flowering. I find the pale but bright green of this one extremely pleasing all season.
A pic from 2015. This year I will get pics of this beauty in its prime flowering period.

7 years agoGot my first Epimedium yesterday at my local nursery. They carry six varieties but only had two yesterday, I picked Sulphureum, now I have to decide where to plant it.
