Anyone growing Epimedium in z5 or less?

I just learned about these plants, and have a perfect shady spot for them. They seem to be a little pricey though, so I'd like to know what varieties any of you may be having success with before I take the plunge.

I have this popping up in all the shady places. When moving into my home the yard had nothing all around the perimeter and under the trees. There were signs of a wonderful garden at one time, but previous owners must have used weed killer on everything except the grass. And thankfully the flowering bushes, vines and trees are still growing beautifully.

Every spring/summer something does start showing up again. This plant is one of them. It doesn't care if it is under an old pine tree, where I built the shed, poking up through rocks and not getting water. I don't know what variety it is, but they all create heavy root systems which is why this plant is growing again.

Considering the growth habits, am not sure why they would be expensive as someone is probably trying to get rid of them constantly. I am also looking at planting ajuga varieties in my dry shade areas. It seems to have the same growth habits.

Winter Savory --Yes, Wsed great, grew wonderfully, expect a bigger bush of it this year (and absolutely love the flavor!!!!) Cleome- Wsing for the first time this year Sweet marjoram- Yes, not perennial, great flavor (a sweeter, milder flavor than oregano...very tasty) Stevia-- No Rosemary-- Yes...it's a little persnickety,though. Almost worth me just buying a plant. Spilanthes-- Wsing for the first time this year, lots of others have with success, from what I've read here. Hoping mine will reseed next year. Calliopsis-- Nope Aster -- perennial and annual do great. Both tolerate being WSed in the dead of winter. the annuals tend to reseed a bit in my yard. Linda

Is 'giant moso' phyllostachys heterocycla hardy z5

It has gotten as cold as 6F already with most of the foliage covered in snow during the chill, but there's still no visible damage on any of the leaves so I think moso is at least hardy into the single digits. Anything colder than this and without the snow cover can probably burn it badly, but I'll dump extra snow on top if it gets below 0F and too much foliage is out of the snow. I think moso may be hardy to zone 5 as long as it snows all the time. The good thing is that these top heavy culms always get weighted down by the snow so I can depend on them getting lots of insulation. Here is a link that might be useful:

Tiffy why did you say Ugh about the Japanese Tree Peony I just love them They take some time to become splendid. Patience. Love the listing of things in bloom just now Liked the comment keep dirt under your fingernails. I know it is not much to be admired among most of my women friends, but I myself, don't mind it at all. Mostly not at all. I have several Hydrangea looking so good and roses with quite a lot of bloom Tropicals as well that sure do catch your eye, such as Brugmansia, Datura and Canna Lilies. Some Chrysanthemums are just opening. Lots of sedums make for a great show. Yes that Russian sage looks good now I am just working on a new large front garden bed. eight feet by sixty It will be sunny all day and I am not planing to water it much So good to have the name of some of these plants listed.

Hair, the winters here are bad enough. New England is much worse. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I did see a large, beautiful baldcypress at Niagara Falls (Ontario), and the nearby northern red oaks & sugar maples were impressive. Regarding hemlocks & woolly adelgids, the little suckers swept thru here a decade ago, but seem to have disappeared mostly. I was hiking at the drainage of nearby Rocky Gap Park lake where there are some stands of mature hemlocks (100' plus). Some dead skeletons showed, but the majority of them seemed mostly recovered. Nothing like the complete devastation in Md's Catocton park.
