Advice for my pink dogwood
Comments (4)if mom has kept it alive for all these years .. i would suggest.. at your level of knowledge ... that you leave it alone ... and try not to kill it by loving it to death ... DO NOTHING ... at least until you post some pix ... we can guide you... on some level ... but we probably wont be able to fix things.. if you start acting in advance ... we like to teach .. if you are willing to learn ... i NEVER fertilize trees .. period ... and as brandon suggested... if you just send me the money for spikes.. it will do as good as actually using them ... here.. this is very basic.. and a good starting point... they are trees.. they are not children.. and as such.. they do not need to be fed.. nor clothed.. nor educated ... to suggest that your yard/garden is so lacking in general nutrients .. that it is completely barren and devoid of life.. is .. well ... a marketers dream ... to sell you fertilizer ... [its another story if its held captive in a pot.. unless its rooted right thru the bottom and actually growing in mother earth ... and then see above] and secondly.. if it leafs out properly ... genetically ... it has.. and will make.. thru photosynthesis .. all it needs to flower .. period... it does not need extra juice from you.. to do such ... and finally .. if this is in the lawn.. and the lawn is heavily fertilized with high nitro fert.. that in itself.. can force excessive vegetative green growth.. to the point that its so juiced on such.. that it will skip flowering ... and double finally ... lack of flowering is usually related to lack of sufficient sunlight ... even shade plants need some requisite level to achieve peak performance .... so.. define its sun culture .... hours .. time of day.. etc ... again... it will sacrifice flowers over production of leaves.. to facilitate leaves.. to process sunlight to photosynthesize ... even understory shade plants.. can be in too dark a situation ... get us some pix ... ken ps: i suppose there is also an issue of whether this was grafted.. and she is now growing flowerless understock ... but i dont know anything about dogwood understock.. to do much more than offer that speculation.. anyone know?????...See MorePink flowering dogwood
Comments (1)Was it flowering when you got it? If not, it may need to be a bit older before it flowers - some varieties of trees need to be over a certain age (varies from 2 to 10 years) before they are mature enough to flower. As well, if the flower buds were just about to open when there was a hard frost, they might have been frozen, which would stop any flowering for the year. By late summer/early fall, you should see big, fat flower buds forming on the stems, if it IS old enough to flower next year. The leaf buds are smaller, narrower, and more pointed than the flower buds. Keep it watered through the summer, and into winter, until the ground freezes (once a week or so, deeeply, the equivalent of an inch a week. If the top few inches of soil are dry, water, if it's still damp, wait and check again another day), as overly dry conditions can also interfere with flowering. And if you haven't mulched, do so - no deeper than 4", as wide as you can, and with NO mulch in the 2-4" next to the trunk....See MorePink Flowering Dogwood not happy
Comments (3)Wrong tree for your climate, certainly. And it does sound like you had some problems with planting techniques. The hole should never be dug any deeper than the plant requires to sit at or ABOVE grade. Wider is great, however. Trees (and shrubs) should be planted into native soil, without the (so-called) benefit of amendments of any kind. Comments (1)My husband tried to do some work in my raised veggie garden on LBI this weekend and the soil about a foot down was still frozen. You will have to test the soil by digging a hole to check on the soil's condition. I think most of the sandy soil in Jersey drains faster than the soil in PA. Good luck!...See Moreovercash_brad
