Old freezer failing. Recommend a new one to buy?

My 30-year-old freezer needs to be replaced right away, I think. The gasket hasn't been good for a while, and no replacement exists any more. But it has been working fine, except for needing defrosting more often than it should. Since it's the old kind with the coils inside solid metal shelves, I like it better than new ones.
But now it's doing something we don't understand. Lots of frost buildup, only on the "ceiling" of the freezer. (I did check to make sure the light goes out.) Temperature is holding at zero rather than minus 10 where it usually is. Mysteriously, ice cream pints were hard but ice cream sandwiches were soft.
I see I am writing a request for help with the old one rather than advice on a new one!
We're not going to pay a repairman to fix this old freezer, but gee, I wish I knew what's happening.
So – what freezer should I get, or not get?
