Tiny balcony in Houston, TX
Comments (5)Hi and welcome to Houston! Creeping fig - evergreen, no flowers (though there's a varigated type.) They get pretty rampant. you'll see them a lot in Houston on the walls. Very easy care. easy to find in landscape places, they're often already kind of large. Grape ivy - sold as a houseplant sometimes. I'll think a little harder to see if there are more flowery options. I'm imagining strong afternoon sun? trumpet creeper's fairly rampant and would probably work. a lot of people hate this plant for this. But it's pretty and you'd have better control over it in a container three floors up. One thing - no matter what, you/DH will have to water it a lot. that's pretty much a given for TX containers....See More3 ton hvac replacement unit - houston, tx
Comments (10)Thank you for the feedback.. FYI - These are not heat Pumps - Strictly straight A/C units w heat strips. The old unit ran fine in its earlier years and in its later years was nursed along and did not cool as well. I believe 3 tons will work fine as the old unit did the job in the early years and had to work in the summer when the sun came in during the late PM in the later years. There is a lot of heat that scomes through those windows in the summer. The efficiencies in todays units probably deliver much better cooling than I was getting.. Especially if they are sealed. I do have a second unit taking care of the living quarters and the Den area which are alongside this main room - when I sealed the unit 2 yrs ago - what a difference.. Another proposal came in today with 2 different A/C units w strips and 2 different Heat Pump quotes from the current Lennox servce provider who services the equipment. 1. Lennox XC14-036 Condenser unit (14.20 SEER/12.00 EER) using the new 410A refrigerant · Lennox CBX26UH36 Fan Coil with Thermostatic Expansion Valve · Lennox ECB26-10CB Heat Strip with circuit breaker · Manufactures warranty Condenser 10 year compressor & 10 year parts, Fan Coil 10 year - $6986.00 Installed w existing Thermostat 2.· Amana ASX14-036 Condenser unit (13.50 SEER/11.80 EER) using the new 410A refrigerant · Amana ARPF363616 Fan Coil with Flow-rater Valve · Amana HKR-10C Heat Strip with circuit breaker · Manufactures warranty Condenser Life Time compressor & 10 year parts, Fan Coil 10 year $7080.00 Installed 3. · Amana ASZ14-036 Heat Pump unit (15.00 SEER/13.00 EER) using the new 410A refrigerant · Amana ASPF303616 Fan Coil with Flow-rater Valve · Amana HKR-10C Heat Strip with circuit breaker · Manufactures warranty Condenser Life Time compressor & 10 year parts, Fan Coil 10 year $8168 installed - and qualifies for Tax credit 4. · Amana ASZ16-036 2- Stage Heat Pump unit (16.00 SEER/12.50 EER) using the new 410A refrigerant · Amana AEPF30361A Fan Coil with Flow-rater Valve · Amana HKR-10C Heat Strip with circuit breaker · Manufactures warranty Condenser Life Time compressor & 10 year parts, Fan Coil 10 year $ 9,442.00 Installed SEERs look a little low compared to the earlier quotes.. I am not familiar w Heat pumps only straight A/c and Heat strip units.. I feel that running that compressor unit in the winter just creates wear..That is why I'm slanted toward heat strips. Can one get a manual J from an independent source or does it have to be a contractor? I hear they are some work to work up and obviously I will pay for it. How much are they. If you have suggestions on specific units / condensor / air handler combinations I'd be happy to check them out as well. This is a big expense and i want to do this right. Thanks...See MoreBest David Austin Roses for Hot, Humid Houston, TX?
Comments (5)I'm in a hot, dry climate, so what I say now doesn't mean much, perhaps, but if someone in TX also recommends some of the following, then maybe those could be good picks. They are roses I grow, and seem to do pretty well in the heat, though they do some resting when it's really bad. I grow all of these, and they have lovely scents: Princess Alexandra of Kent, Munstead Wood (even though it's dark colored), Evelyn, perhaps Boscobel, though I need to grow it longer, and though I can't wholeheartedly recommend it, Brother Cadfael. Not so good are Eglantyne, Jude the Obscure, The Prince, Tamora, and others. Diane...See MoreDoes anyone grow English roses in Houston,TX?
Comments (28)I would recommend a mix of a few varieties because you have a warm climate and can thus have roses year round if you do a mix of different species. Well except maybe for this last year with your crazy snowstorm! What I have noticed about the Austin roses is that they behave for me as if the winter was a real thing here in Los Angeles. They might be daylight tuned? They bloom through the late fall and then completely stop and go dormant with no blooms from Dec-Mar regardless of whether I prune them. Then they put out an incredible Spring flush and bloom through the summer and into fall, but to a lesser extent. The Teas (and I mean real Teas not Hybrid Teas) pretty much bloom in the complete opposite seasons. Teas come from warmer places in China and they do have a wonderful Spring flush but then it gets hot and they stop blooming. Then the Teas put out an amazing fall flush that continues through the end of February. Basically the Teas bloom all winter and the Austins bloom all summer. I only have one modern Hybrid Tea “Belinda’s Blush” and she blooms with the Austin’s. I also have a collection of Polyantha roses, which seem to bloom year round. The only time they stop is when I prune them back hard in February. Marie Pavie is already setting buds 6 weeks after her hard prune....See MorePatty W. zone 5a Illinois
