Life of the Party LOVES heat in Houston, TX

Life of the Party rose obviously loves heat. I'm totally blown away by how prolific this rose has been this year after turning one year in spring. Very full, fluffy plus heavenly fruity fragrance. While it clearly does love your Humid Heat, mine absolutely hates our dry heat. Life of the Party is one of my first roses to fry in a heat wave, even after I moved it to mostly shade.

@sautesmom Sacramento That's very interesting to hear and sorry it fries in your heat. Mine gets harsh afternoon sun but does very well. It must like humidity.

If it were me starting this late in this wonderful state I would go with peppers, and egg plant that is on your list. I would buy the largest most mature transplants I could get. Starting either from seed would take way too long to get growing to the point that you would get anything near to ripe fruit off of them. Once the heat of mid June hits you will not see much if any fruit set till the heat wave breaks in late Sept. I would suggest hot weather lovers this late. Things like green beans, okra (I have love hate with it. I love to eat it. It is easy to grow here. The problem is anything short of a flame thrower has limited effect on the fire ants that will keep crawling over the dead ones to get to the fruit, then they burrow inside of it,and ruin it.) If you have room for it summer squash does great, as do most any melons. Plant the vines in the corners, and you can trail them over the edge leaving room for the other veggies. If you like the greens then plant radishes. Though the heat tends to make the root like a pencil if you are lucky. Like a piece of yarn if you are not. If you want good radish then avoid rich soil as it makes for great greens from them, and small root.

If you want to order Rabbiteyes, Just Fruits and Exotics in florida has the most varieties that I've found on line. I have Woodard and haven't been very impressed with the berries at all. Maybe they get better with age? I hope that's the case. If it doesn't get better fruit this year its gone. If I were you I would get Brightwell. Its hands down the best Rabbiteye in my collection. I live in Seabrook just south of Houston and the plant grows and fruits great in this area. The only problem I had with brightwell is leaf fungus if spring is really wet like last spring and the berries will split when ripening if it rains really hard. The cool thing about brightwell is the berries are sweet as soon as they turn blue so if it's going to rain you can pick them with a little red on there back and they are still great. Last spring I fruited Brightwell, Beckyblue and Woodard. Bright well stole the show and my family liked them better than my Southern High Bush. This year I will fruit the same ones along with Blue Gem, Alapaha and Austin. I will report my results but I'm willing to bet that Brightwell will again steal the show.

Thanks for posting! How deep is your pool and what made you decide on the dive rock? We have 8 ft with a diving board that I want to take out - partially because it takes up so much of the deck and party because I think it's dangerous. But everyone who comes over loves the diving board and hates that I say I'm going to remove it! Kids, adults, everyone - it gets a workout during our pool parties while I clutch my chest and warn people not to dive head first; cannonballs, can openers and belly flops only. I've never even used it, myself.

We love our’s on the North Carolina coast. Our’s are electric, not hot water. We set the temperature we want and they turn on when the temperature in the room drops. Had not expected to leave it on all day, but our cats sleep there most of the time n the winter.

I have the same trouble as Carla--dry heat, and the dry is worse on my roses than the heat. Your photos of Life of the Party are gorgeous and among the best I've seen. Diane

Were these photos taken now (mid June)? If so, do you treat for blackspot. And if so, what is your regimen?

@Diane Brakefield Thank you Diane. I used to think that dry heat may be better, as humidity always gives us troubles for blackspots and powdery mildew. But looks like humidity may not be too horrible after all.

@rifis (zone 6b-7a NJ) Hi Rifis: yes, I took these photos this month, just a few days ago. There are more on the blog in case you haven't seen them. Last year it was blackedspotted horrbily in the summer. I don't know if this is too early or it's healthier or I'm lucky but I haven't seen a lot of blackspots on it yet. I don't spray at all in my garden. No neem, no fungicide, insecticide. Just water, feed, and clean foliages from time to time. I have a channel on Youtube Roses In Houston that has 2 videos about my June Garden Tour and my routine.

TW H, it's always a trade off. I love that we don't get fungal disease on the roses, but dry heat not only increases burning, the scent of roses evaporates and nothing wafts outside. A bouquet inside usually does some wafting, but not always. I guess we gardeners can't have it all good when it comes to weather, water, and pests. Diane

@Diane Brakefield Thank you so much for sharing with me what it's like to grow roses in dry heat. Definitely make the best out of the climate that we have. Heat this year is brutal and has been challening. Hope you and your roses stay as cool as possible.

Thanks. Impressive foliage the whole way down for June in Houston, no spray. I presume there’s been no shortage of stormy weather this year. The blooms are spectacular.

@rifis (zone 6b-7a NJ) Thank you rifis. Well, we haven't had much rain at all so far this year. Water bill is skyrocketing trying to keep these roses alive this summer. Sevearl of my roses start to show sign of heat stress. I'll report back how it does in July and August.
