YAY! I have a rat snake!

I was walking out of my gate, and met him coming in. I tried to take a pic, but he skittered off behind a board I have stashed up against the wall outside. He's just a baby, maybe 2 feet long. I'm so glad to have him! Now I know I won't have mice or moles or other critters. I think I dug him up when I took out the lantana. I found one of those never-ending holes under it, so that was probably his home. In fact, I've found several bottomless holes when I was planting, mostly close to the walls or sidewalk, and rat snakes like to hide in cool places so under concrete would be great for them.

I'm sorry, baby snake! You can come live in my courtyard if you want. I just need to look out for him now, so he doesn't freak and bite me.

ETA:

I guess he figured I'm friendly, because he's now out sunning himself
amongst the trays of starts and cuttings. Went to pick one up and
almost grabbed his tail, but he didn't run, so I guess I have a garden
friend. I'll name him/her Sam, because that can be a male or female
name.
