What makes an employee stand out from the crowd?
Comments (21)I was a head grower for awhile, and what I noticed most in the crew were the self starters. It got pretty old after a few weeksof training when I had to keep reminding people that just because nobody actually told them to pick up a hose, didn't mean they couldn't take it on themselves to touch up the dry ones. The second thing I noticed were people who actually seemed to "look at" what they were doing. They didn't have to be highly trained to notice when a plant didn't look quite right. They just had to have the power of observation. I have seen crews tagging impatiens and keep on moving to petunias and still be tagging them with impatien labels. Even if they were illiterate, somebody should have paid enough attention to see they sort of looked a little bit different? LOLOL. The third thing I saw was the personality conflict stuff. It's a job, not a contest, and teamwork is important. One person with baggage can make the most enjoyable job in the world one you hate to go to every morning. Sometimes it's a good thing if you smile a lot, and keep your mouth closed if it isn't constructive or kind. Be enthused! That's easy if you love what you are doing. I think that'll come naturally to you, it shows in your post. But rememer a lot of people you work with are there because it's a job. Most temp crews will not be back next year, especially if it's just a job to them. When you are not busy (and you will be plenty busy when the season hits, but there are down times like rainy days) if you are not on a break, find things to do. Retail areas get dusty and disheveled quickly. One day during a dry, hot spell every one of the crew were back in the break room guzzling sodas and shooting bull and I was antsy and bored, so I grabbed a bucket and rag and started cleaning the shelves and neatening up the stock. The second in command just happened in from a landscape job unexpectedly. It didn't hurt me one bit to be busy. There are ALWAYS things to do somewhere in a nursery. Always. This goes back to being a self starter. Know your product. And yes..........repeat often how you would like to be a permanent part of the operation. Take advantage of any learning experiences. If they don't come automatically, do it on your own. It'll pay you back in the end....See MoreHow to make this metal piece stand out more?
Comments (34)ML, those are amazing! I wonder where one finds such large reels? Hmmmm ... Oh, that little floor shelf is just a make-do for the time being. Actual storage is in the wall unit where the tv resides. I think I've fallen out of love with the metal piece I first posted. I've looked at so much of this crap ... er, stuff ... online that I'm starting to see the same things over and over and over, and that flat reel is one of them. I think those real reels (ha) are fab though. ETA: Just perusing vintage film reels on eBay, and the metal ones are not inexpensive. :-(...See MoreSome progress made in figuring out my new exterior look.
Comments (40)I would so love a wood door but it faces south and is wide open to the elements. I'm afraid it would self destruct pretty quickly. Maybe next year if we go ahead with the idea of putting in some kind of overhang we could replace the door. This year were going to clad the concrete stoop in the Pennsylvania blue flagstone to match the walkway and back patio. kswl2, what shutter color do you think with the bright white? Wouldn't black be too stark? Very deep plum?...See MoreCurb appeal: paint and trim color, garage door?
Comments (35)This is he new garage door - those shrubs are being removed Monday, and once our water wise rebate is approved we can start new landscaping in place of the "lawn". Pinkmountain the walkway doesn't actually narrow but I agree the fact that it is narrower than and not aligned with the entryway "porch" is annoying. If we create a new front door though, we'd likely put a sidelight there or siding, so it would notnlook so strange. We are getting quotes for this now. If anyone has photoshop and could take a stab at a mockup I'd love it - I am only using my phone while nursing baby right now :) current resident, the previous owner was the son of the guy who built the house and there were some DIY changes done but most of this stuff was actually original including the garage door made of plywood over a metal frame. We are not sure when they decided to set the tub in 100 gallons of dirt/backfill (not mortar or sand). The original kitchen and layout are far from MCM it's more of a ranch than modern - no open floor plan or modern original features.but we are trying to move toward a bit more simple/contemporary look. We've had to put a lot of cash into the the house on vital things like completely new roof (tore off 3 layers of shingles and replaced all the sheathing) re-piping (corroded galvanized steel pipes) and so on... not a lot left over for aesthetics now. Some updates will have to be done over time. Where should I mount new house numbers? We currently have 2 locations one by the window and one beside the garage, we will remove those before painting and get new numbers. Would this style light be appropriate for the house? I like the idea of black door hardware and lighting too....See Morebusybee3
