I've made my first purchase for next year . . .
Comments (6)yg - unusual? Why? Seems to me to be common enough of a lot of my posts - a rather strongly expressed opinion :-) Here's what impresses me about 'Big Smile' (Sweet Chris) - it is a very robust plant with a compact habit, great foliar attraction and considerable PM resistance. It has dark maroon stems and distinct leaf veining and develops a very rich fall color. These features contrast beautifully with the lacecap flowerheads, which tend to pinky-mauve in my area and often with a darker edge. It's a coloring I find partcularly useful in the garden as it offers a lot of possbilities for combining with other plants. They fade to a pleasing (to me) pinkish tan color. Like oakleaf hydrangeas, there is a lot more to this plant than just a flower show in season, a requirement for any new addition to my garden. Except for winter when the plant is dormant, it has a lot to offer over and above just seasonal flowers. And it's not very gimmicky, which seems to be a failing of a lot of new plant introductions. And, finally it is not a mophead with big, basketball-sized flowers, which I find overblown and blowsey. As I said, I don't have room for many new shrubs and hydrangeas are only one of my many plant passions. Inclusion into an already overplanted garden requires a shrub that makes a statement for itself over a long period, which Big Smile does in spades. Now I just have to figure out what comes out so that BS goes in :-)...See MoreI've started a blog of my progress this year.
Comments (10)I have to admit I saw this thread before anyone posted and promptly marked it in my favorites. Ezz - I'll mark and follow yours too. I've found following garden blogs to be a HUGE help in my efforts, not to mention it's just plain fun! I follow 4 blogs of friends I met here, although 2 don't post anymore. One (Ilene) has become a very dear friend in person AND my life would not be the same without Glenda's French Bread recipe. Can't forget to mention the antidotes that tigerdawn adds with her critters and her plants! Of course, I follow Diane's! It's how I keep up with how big her kids are growing! I also have to say I admire you greatly if you do "blog". I'm blessed in many ways but I'm just not "together" enough to do that so THANK YOU to you all that do!...See MoreHelp! Comments (66)I love the furniture you've picked out. It will look bright and cheery and just the feeling of the inspiration pics you've posted in your other threads...once you paint! Paint the darn room already! :) My last house had muddy mauve and no natural light (houses on three sides and a big porch on the other). As soon as I painted, it changed everything. Even my mood was better. And if you have a front porch, I suggest you paint the porch ceiling blue. It made a big difference looking out my window and seeing Martha Stewart's Porch Ceiling Blue. Almost as good as being able to see the sky. :) Let your room evolve. Don't feel like it has to be "done" right away. Take your time finding art and accessories that you love. You're doing great and you're going to have a lovely space to enjoy....See MoreI've ruined my garden for this year...
Comments (45)If you want to do a soil test at home, there are kits available. It's not as accurate as those run in a lab, but results are usually in the ballpark. If you don't see kits in any of your local garden centers, then order one online. It certainly is a mysterious problem, and I hope you will follow up with how your next planting fares ... and the cause, if it ever is discovered....See MoreD McElhaney Sr
