That's a silly question on this forum. I do hope Annie and all our other friends will be safe in the bad winter weather hitting north of me. Indiana is lucking out, but the rest of you up north better be heating up the pots of soup and stay inside.

Also hope our other friends to my west and south are safe in the severe storms.

I heard that northern WI could get a foot or more of the nasty white stuff. Chicago is getting rain, storm and a dusting of snow so we are lucky.

And if I know Annie, she is well set to tackle this storm.

Yes, I'm ready. We're having 5-8 inches of snow according to the forecasters (who are seldom right) Right now it's freezing rain, 25 MPH winds with gusts up to 40 MPH. It'll change to rain sometime during the night, and the wind will moderate. So the generator is gassed up, the tub is full of water for flushing toilets etc and the lanterns are close at hand if the power goes off. Hay feeders and water tanks are full, the chickens are closed in their coop, the barn is open to the big animals if they choose to go inside.

Now watch, that big red cow will decide to have a calf tonight...

Here is an easy to understand guide for echinacea http://www.gardenguides.com/articles/coneflower.htm I really recommend you cut the root up before drying... you will need a hacksaw to cut it up when dried! :o) for contraindications http://www.herbmed.org/Herbs/Herb6.htm I know it stops working after like 8 days, so really short term is all that is needed.

How do you prepare leaves that have been mailed to you?

I dip them in 1/4 solution of Clorax for a minute or 2, rinse, recut the stem a bit, wrap in a wet towel and keep the towel vertically in a glass or jar - so the bottom gets extra soaking, but the leaves are not submerged, may be only the ends of the stems. This way - you can keep them overnight - if they came really limp - like from overseas. Inspect the leaves - trim all damaged areas. Sometimes it is so damaged - you can only save a wedge from a leaf - it will also root and give you a baby - but much slower. If the leaves are more or less OK - after the Clorax - you can let them float a bit in a sugar solution - just a pinch of sugar per bowl of tepid water - and/or several drops of Superthrive. If you harvest your own leaves and pot them immediately - it is not necessary - but if they are stressed from the road - why not? Good Luck Irina

I think there's a world of difference between panicking and buying enough for 6 months, and taking basic precautions and buying basic supplies for a few weeks knowing there's a highly infectious virus making the rounds. It's a good idea to be prepared for a few weeks even without the outbreak. We all live in places where natural disasters can, and do, happen, and having only a few days of food or other supplies necessary for survival isn't a great situation. We have plenty of food and most of our supplies are well-stocked. I did buy some toilet paper as we were already low. I wish I could just stay in my house for 3 months but that's unreasonable. :) It wouldn't bother me a bit!

I do have a device on my tank, well one of the two lol. The one that does not have the device is the one on my loves office, and he lets it run out before saying anything. The new tank on my side of the house gave me the message to make the order. But it was a matter of 5-7 business days- so either Friday or after the weekend of Monday or Tues. I had the bad luck of falling into the end of Tuesday to be scheduled. Propane got delivered this morning and everything is running fine again. It was nice to see my usual friendly propane guy :) We have been using the baseboard heaters for almost a decade before finally getting a new furnace last fall for my side of the house. So a few days to cover while awaiting a fill wasn't too bad, the snow timing just sucked, lol. And that would have been fine except the snow blower not starting was a bummer.

Well, did that big red cow have her calf that night? My ex-sister-in-law posted a picture of one of her cows with the question "will she make it to April". With the look of the udder, it's questionable. With horses I learned it was always up in the air.
