Dark most definitely.

It's as dark as possible in the BR, per my "sleep doctor's" orders, but a small amount of light enters the hall way, mostly from the moon. I invested in some effective blackout blinds at his suggestion. I keep a small motion triggered night light in the bathroom.

I have a tv in the bedroom but set the timer for thirty minutes. I'm invariably asleep by the time it goes off.

No light on in the bedroom but the master bath does have a night light. I turn on my bedside lamp when I go to the bathroom or any where during the night. There is a small lamp on in the formal living room and one in the den.

Light - dark, I think I'm indifferent. As long as it doesn't make noise, it doesn't seem to affect my sleeping and light doesn't make noise ;-). Anyone awake could navigate this house pretty well in the middle of the night. I have a couple of decorative lamps with 7W bulbs that are never turned off, one in the living room, one in the master. 3 dusk to dawn nightlights (foyer, kitchen, hallway from my mudroom). Lots of outside lighting that filters in, so light from the small deck near my bedroom, front entry, back doors and garage at the office end of my house. 6 lights in the back garden that are on all night.

I can sleep during the day so light doesn't bother me but at night I want dark. No nightlights and I turn any rechargables like phones and kindles away from me so I don't see the indicator lights. My bedside clock does have a light because it's necessary to wake me. It has flashing lights and a vibrator when the alarm goes off.

Dark as possible, I even unplug t.v. and other electronics as the lights on them bother me.

Dark. If I fall asleep with the light on, I wake up after no more than an hour and sometimes can't get back to sleep. I have a newish clip style LED book light which works really well on lighting up my book, isn't heavy the way the old incandescent ones were (smaller and fewer batteries), and goes a long time. The light is very focused so doesn't bother other sleeper, but it has just enough ambient--like a very cloudy night with the moon out--that it also makes a good light the way to the bathroom and back without carrying it. I don't seem to fall asleep with it on, which is a boon. I think because it's harder to just lay the book on one's chest or close on a finger.

Dark, I put black electric tape on all the appliances that have the tiny red, green or blue light on them. Cover the digital display on cable box and the window AC. So the remotes won't work. Have to make tape so it will peel down when I want to change a setting. Cannot stand the digital display lights. DH thinks I have a wire loose.

as long as everything is off, lights-tv, i am fine., we leave our blinds up so we get light from the street lights ( we are in the back of house) so its not as bad as it sounds. i like to wake up and see our tree out back and the sky and sun. DH could sleep in bright lights, TV or an explosion, no matter.

I fall asleep within 5 minutes of my head hitting the pillow. I go to bed around the same time each night and don't nap or snooze at all during the day or evening. Whether it's light or dark when I'm falling asleep doesn't matter and once asleep, I usually sleep through to the morning.

I am sensitive to sound though and my wife is nice enough to do her TV watching outside the bedroom or to end it when I come to bed.

It doesn't matter to me, as long as it doesn't change. The missus used to keep on a light on her dresser. I always am in bed hours before her. When she came into the bedroom, she passed between the light and me and it awoke me. It thinks I am goofy (that is another topic completely!).

Flashing lights from emergency vehicles or lightning do the same thing. Don't change it, whatever it is.

I wouldn't be able to sleep in bright light but a little light doesn't bother me.

Dark bedroom, but do have a very dim nightlight in the hall near the bathroom.

Dark AND quiet means I will toss and turn all night. Hubby prefers it dark but the quiet also bothers him.

Doesn't really matter. If I am sleepy, I can sleep with the lights and the TV on. Sometimes I fall asleep when reading.

Generally dark, but I don't need the room to be completely without light. I am awakened occasionally when the moon is full and bright as it seems to shine in the bedroom window. More important for my comfort is moving air and a certain amount of quiet. I must sleep under a fan. I can't stand it when the air is still.

Pitch black with a fan running for white noise and a ceiling fan for air movement. I have room darkening shades on the bedroom windows because it can still be light out in the summer when we go to bed at 9 p.m.. The only light in the room is the little red light on the smoke detector and the luminous hands on the clock. I keep a flat LED flashlight in my p.j.'s pocket to light my way to the bathroom when I get up at 3 a.m. (without the aid of the alarm) where I change to my exercise outfit in the bathroom. Hubby gets up an hour later, except on the weekends when he sleeps in until 5:30 or 6:00. I rarely sleep-in, and sleep-in for me would be 3:30.

We also use a sound machine while sleeping. A train passes through town every hour and the horn is long and loud. Actually, it's longer and louder at 3 AM than it is at 3 PM.

I like some light. I am uncomfortable in a very dark room. I have a very active imagination and I can convince myself that there is something there. :) I have a nightlight in the bedroom and if I am traveling I leave the bathroom light on with the door open a little bit. My husband is very sensitive to light and has to wear a sleep mask to accommodate my need for a little light. I tease him because he complains about light with a mask on and his eyes closed and I have no idea how that is possible.

I like money! $$$$ For 3 years, I worked 12 hour days, 3 days a week, 4 weeks days then rotated to nights. Commuting 90 miles each way. I slept 5 hours maybe 5.5. I was sleep deprived, but I slept well! So light or dark as long as there's a paycheck at the end of the week!

I still sunbath and cat nap when I do it.

I can sleep through almost anything but we have a couple of clocks that provide light in the room The bathroom also has a nightlight which is a good thing because I wake up at least three times a night for a visit. Good thing I don't have any trouble falling back to sleep.

Always a nightlight in the bathroom and the hall. I've smacked into doorframes half asleep too many times at 3 am without a bit of light.

I like it dark, but there are the sounds of the humidifier next to my side of the bed and my husbands CPap machine next to his side... I don't mind background noise. (There's a small nightlight in the hallway too.)

When I'm traveling I always, always pack a couple of tiny night lights.

I don't mind a little light as long as it isn't shining directly in my eyes.

I am the same as MarcoPolo, I put black tape over every machine in the room and have blackout shades in the window.

We have a street light outside our window. At first we found it bright, but we soon got used to it. The window is open wide, year round, and if we closed the blinds, they would rattle like crazy all nite.

I also see the flashing lights from fire trucks (which come to the large apt bldg across the street regularly). They are first to respond to heart attacks, etc. Same as the snow plows with their bright lights in the middle of the nite.

Light doesn't matter. I prefer dark, with very dim nightlight in the bathroom. But if it's silent, I'm wide awake. I can't fall asleep when it's silent. I can fall asleep with the tv on or use an app on my phone that plays the sound of rain. Also have a soundmachine/alarm clock. I can set the app on my phone for a hour and 15 minutes, perfect!

CLOCK??? That reminds me. I used to go visiting where there was a nice comfy bed in the great room. And a CLOCK. Just sitting on a wood desk. TICKing. Inexorably TICKing. I found the only way to sleep was to put it in an empty laundry basket that was on the floor of the coat closet. Which worked fine until the time I got the call asking me why the clock was in the laundry. :) I have also been known to drape electronic displays with Kleenexes, weighted by whatever was handy. Even when I wasn't supposed to be sleeping in the room, I took exception to a different ticking horror, which was on an end table, I'm told, because there needed to be an alarm clock in the living room, I found a very nice one of similar size and function and better looks, which was guaranteed to be silent (of ticking, not alarm), and gave it to the owner as a present. It performs as advertised. :)

Dark, which is why I love my north facing master. Even during the middle of the day the room is dark when I close the drapes.

I have to have complete darkness and silence. I had to cover my alarm box in my bedroom when I moved in here because even that slight blue light drives me nuts. I can see it even when my eyes are closed. Same with sounds. I can hear every little thing.

My mother in law, aunt and cousin are coming to spend 10 days with me. She has to sleep with the TV on. My aunt and cousin are taking the spare rooms and mother in law will sleep with me. We have shared many rooms in hotels before and I have a giant king size bed. I dread it because I know her and the TV. So I will lay in bed with covers, arms anything I can over my head, ear plugs and wait for her to go to sleep so I can turn the TV off the minute she is out lol. Now her snoring. I have threatened to banish her downstairs to the livingroom if she snores. She is bringing breathe right strips lol.

Soon as the light starts seeping into my bedroom in the morning I am awake. I can not go back to sleep unless it is a cloudy day and the room stays dark. In MA the sun usually started coming up around 4:30-5am which made for a long day. Here in Florida it comes up between 6-7 am which makes it a little easier to sleep in.

Oh for those of you that have night lights. One of the best features in my new house is the smart lights I love them! They are set in my master bath, Hall at the top of stairs, foyer bottom of stairs and my kitchen. As soon as I step in those areas the lights come on. After 30 seconds of no movement they go right off. I could not tell you where the light switches are for those places are because I have never had to use them lol.

They are on dimmer switches with motion sensors easy to have installed and make a huge difference in the electric bill in my home because the lights I would use most never get left on because they shut off when no one in the room.

I will never have a house without them now I have become so spoiled lol. It's great to wake up in the middle of the night go to bathroom poof light comes on, want to go down stairs get a drink lights pop on all the way down your path and great when you have guests because they don't have to fumble looking for light switches to navigate the house. You can set them to come on full light or low light. They also sense the light inside the house so they don't come on when it is day light but as soon as a storm hits and it gets darker in the house they will come on or once it is dusk.

Speaking of clocks. I cannot rest when I hear a clock ticking. When I was younger and my sister and I shared a room,she had to have an alarm clock for some reason. I would wait until she was asleep and then go and hide it in the living room.Problem was that we only had a two bedroom then and my brothers slept in the living room on a pull out sofa. I was in trouble with all three of them.

I have at least 3 night lights in the bedroom and one in the bathroom. Its fairly lit up in there.

Lights in the bedroom - even tiny ones - interfere with deep sleep.

@ Brushworks - I'm the exact opposite. I have lived near trains most of my life and I can sleep through the whistles and love to sleep on trains. But a noise machine would send me to the asylum. LOL I don't like white noise, fans or even the hum the fridge that is no where near the bedroom. I may be profoundly deaf but noise actually hurts.

I like it very quiet and also dark but do have a night light and can't sleep if it goes out when power goes off and now the light from my clock radio beside the bed. I have this tiny flashlight that I use when have to go to bathroom as the nightlight isn't any good for that, its actually a green light and so its not a bright one by anything. I have black out curtains someone sent to me and I love them alot. I wake up with slightness sounds. Pets I loved them but kept waking me up and couldn't get good night solid sleeps.

Thanks sushipup for the vote of confidence. I want to be transparent and just want to share my knowledge and of course learn from experts on all sorts of topics. This is a great forum and lots of posts...even the old ones...are very informative. It is a great place to explore and share. There is a time and a place for selling and this is not it. It is great to see all the different areas of expertise so we can ask specific ppl questions.
