4" Gap Between Wall and Gas Range: how to disguise

We recently installed new granite countertops and a gas range. However, there's a small issue which I'm having difficulty reconciling. The natural gas pipe extends through the floor roughly 4" from the wall. As a result, there is a 4" gap between the wall and the back of the range. I'm not sure it matters aesthetically, but I was thinking of making a custom shelf that would extend the width of the range and be about 4-6" deep.

In the picture below, the range is beyond the breakfast bar to the right of the counter. If a small shelf to conceal that gap seems like a good idea, any thoughts on materials? The range is stainless steel, so that was my first thought. However, I'm not opposed to anything else that'd tie in well or be unique.
