Which is warmest part of yard?

Out of curiosity I've decided to order a few roses on Fortuniana rootstock to see just how huge they get here in nice, water retentive, rich clay soil. That rootstock is hardy to zone 7, so I intend to use winter protection of the roots and graft and also proper site selection to do this.

So that said, I am debating which of the two would be the warmest part of my backyard in winter:

1) Middle of the yard that gets plenty of sunshine even in winter but is very much subject to winds

2) North of my back fence which is protected at least from some east to west winds and of course from most south to north winds but unfortunately is in 100% shade from November until early March.

Thoughts?
