The rain is hurting my flowers! ...and what about shade?
Comments (2)With petunias, just pinch off the damaged flowers along with the little stems (petioles) attaching them to the plant. New flowers will appear tomorrow. Same with marigolds and dianthus. All these flowers do well in full sun. They tell you sun to part shade on the label so you know you can plant them in any of those environments with good results. If they didn't like full sun, the label wouldn't say it. Like ken said, above, go with the flow, observe and learn, and don't worry. If you have no deer or voles eating your plants, count yourself very lucky and just enjoy. I suggest for all newbies to get a beginner gardening book at your local garden center and go from there. Comments (11)It looks like pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' which is one I find takes a long time to bloom. Mine probably took 8 years, and it didn't bloom until I got my GH and it went out there. Does it hang very close to a window, and what exposure? I have another large one that's in my dining room that grows beautifully, but isn't showing any signs of blooming - just not enough light, I'm sure. It's in an east window, which I find ideal for Hoyas, but just not quite sufficient to get blooms on some of them. South is probably better for blooms, but I don't like the way a southern exposure washes the color out of the leaves, so I wait patiently for them to bloom in east or west windows... Have you ever put your Hoya outside on a covered porch in summer? They do well in a shady spot outside in summer, as long as you keep them watered good. Sometimes, a summer outside will kick-start them blooming. Denise in Omaha...See MoreHoyas & other flowers in my garden(lots of photos)
Comments (37)Jan, I really like that MG picota, I've not seen that one before. I put some growing up the lattice on the side of my shade house in red, white and blue but they don't get enough sun so I only get a couple blooms at a time and not all three at once. Oh Well, the vine looks cool. Jo...See Moremy first hoya flower.....
Comments (3)Congrats on your first hoya bloom! When I got my first hoya (H. Kerrii). I always wondered how long it would take before it bloomed. So I went out and got H. Carnosa, then H. Pubicalyx. I just couldn't wait, but before I knew it, I had blooms. My H. Kerrii at the time took forever to bloom, and when it did, it was messy! Anyways, I just love the fragrance of H. Lacunosa. I have a Lacunosa Tove that makes pink-ish flowers:...See MoreUser
