Comments (5)For the third year in a row, a pair of swallows--tree swallows, we think--have appeared, ready to build a nest in a bird house in our small backyard. We assume they're offspring of last year's birds. They each find a perch on two shepherd's hooks attached to our deck. We delight in seeing them swoop and circle, then alight six feet from us. Once Mama is sitting on eggs, Papa feeds her diligently and keeps watch. Often, he'll go in the nest and she'll fly off to find her own insects. However, as closely as we try to watch, we've only once seen the babies eventually take off and fly away....See MoreIt must be Spring because Cottage farms is on QVC
Comments (5)According to the Roberta's gardening representative on QVC, peonies DO grow in Florida! Gosh I am going to get some! This is so misleading. First they danced around the issue. The host asked if there was anywhere they wouldn't grow. He said they are cold hardy. Then a caller who purchased them said "I hope these will grow in Florida." He asked where she was in Florida and she told him Clearwater. He said there wouldn't be any problem. I bet if she had said Key West he would have given the same answer. On the QVC website it says they can be grown in zones 3-8. It costs $36 shipped....See Moremust be spring
Comments (9)On my place, there are three signs that tell me Spring has finally sprung: 1. The Hummingbird Moths come; 2. Seven to fourteen days later, the Hummingbirds arrive. They buzz by my head and hover for a second, just to say "Hello! We're back!" and then dart off to build their nests. I get out their feeders, knowing they are drained after their long migration. 3. The Chimney Swifts come home for the summer. Just as the Hummers, they dive down and zip by my head, so close I can feel the wake of air. Then they fly about tweatering and circling the property and zoom, down into the chimney to start their nests. It is usually about that time that all the spring flowering bulbs and flowering shrubs in various shades of pink, yellow, purple, red, orange and white, and fruit trees are in full bloom. My ancient lilacs burst into sweet perfume and Jane Magnolia awes me with color and fragrance that fills my whole place with it's luscious perfume. The Old Garden Roses & Lavenders are not long to follow and the Bearded Irises. Pure heaven as far as I am concerned. Can't wait! So when those 3 things above happen, I shall pretty well feel that there won't be any seriously cold weather from that point in time - Spring has sprung! ~SweetAnnie4u "There is no spot of ground, however arid, bare or ugly, that cannot be tamed into such a state as may give an impression of beauty and delight." - Gertrude Jekyll...See MoreMust be Spring, Cold Hardys are here!
Comments (19)The HD and Lowes here have gone crazy with there prices. They only have S.minors,Green Mediterranean fans, and B.capitatas.They do have one more type W.robustas, the worst looking ones I've ever seen. Chad, The T.fortuneis they have here are no where near the size of the ones in your picture. They have 1gal.size palms in 3gal.size pots for $20. There doing that with all there cold hardy palms here. There all a lot smaller than what size pot they have them in.Then there priced twice what they was last year.I cant believe what there doing. Most of them has some type of disease on them also. You would think there selection would get better and there sizes would be at least what there supposed to be. If HD and Lowes keep doing this it will drive people away from buying palm trees. It's sad to because there is no other places that sell cold hardy palms around here anymore. They need to get there palms from some other vendor than the one there using. I just thought I would post about this so people wouldn't think it's just in the north.I'm going back to the Internet myself to buy my palms from. If anybody knows of a good nursery around Atlanta,GA.that sells a good selection of palms at reasonable prices, please let me know. Randy...See More- 10 years ago
