Going to my first ever college basketball game tonight
Comments (7)oh, Kathleen, it might be better than you imagine. I think they last about 1 1/2 hours. Depends on time outs etc. Years ago I didn't give a hoot about sports. Finally was compelled to go because youngest is an all sports kid. She plays in school and took me to college games too. I prefer college game over high school. Not as rough, they seem to play cleaner, while jr High and high school is soooo rough! DD played an advanced team last summer and I got to know the rules and the plays so much better which helped me to enjoy what I was seeing. It's as though all of us parents watched for the great plays and lousy calls. I didn't holler in disgust but some parents where pretty good at it! lol! I was good at cheering them on, our girls actually asked us to be louder so they could hear us as they ran. Guess I'm saying, the more you understand what's happening the better the game! Hope you do have fun even if it's just watching the girls enjoy it. :) Their time here is half over by now I'm guessing. What have you gotten from this experience?...See MoreHey basketball fans...
Comments (107)Well, sadly our Jayhawks have reached the end of their March. Villinova shot the lights out of their 3s tonight...so congratulations to their fine team. Sister Jean and her Loyola team met their match also by Michigan....so Villanova and Michigan teams march on to Monday. The finals for the women’s tournament Mississippi State will be playing Norte Dame Sunday...may the best teams win...it has been a great tournament of upsets and surprises for sure!...See Moreany other hockey fans?
Comments (14)Not a fan, but I live in St Louis. I did not watch any of the games, but for the last two I could tell when a good play was made or goal was scored because I'd hear car horns honking and a big cheer emanating from the tavern 2 blocks away. When the play off was won, fireworks erupted everywhere. I got a kick out of the big fireworks display over the parking lot of the nearby big grocery store. It was quite impressive for an impromptu display. Oh, I had also driven by a screen print and embroidery shop while the last game was just starting. Normally that shop is closed at 5pm but I could see they had the lights on, ready to churn out tens of thousands of t-shirts should the Blues win. Well, the shop employees got their overtime. Comments (8)I think it was long overdue when a few decades ago opportunities to play team sports was affirmatively encouraged and opened up to girls and women in a way that should have been the case long ago before. I pushed my daughters into sports (they needed to try but could quit when they wanted) and they're much better off for it. All played into the club level of college. Being athletically active teaches girls and women lifetime physical fitness lessons and encourages positive body self image feelings. At pre-adult age levels, it's a healthier perspective for a kid to see more beauty in running a fastest ever 50 yard dash than in personal vanity and worrying about having a new hairdo. Having said that, while I think women's leagues are a good thing at an adult level, I can't bring myself to enjoy watching them. Whether it's basketball, soccer (of which I've long been a big fan), or whatever. In the case of soccer, I certainly admire the abilities and devotion of women players but the fact is that just like with basketball, women don't run as fast, jump as high, or have the same agility or strength men have and as a result their sports contests are a bit slower, a bit less physical and acrobatic, and for me not as enjoyable to watch. No need to throw rocks, I'm a supporter in an emotional and political sense. Just not an enthusiastic fan when it comes to attending or watching....See More- 10 years ago
