Dollar Stores
Comments (25)I'm another fan of Dollar Tree. I think some of the other "dollar" stores are misnamed, as their stuff costs a lot more than $1. I bought some very nice martini glasses and wine glasses at Dollar Tree, made in the Netherlands. I like their Dead Sea Minerals creams (for hand & body, feet, etc.), made in Israel. Their bottled water comes from a domestic source and is pretty good. I like their small yellow "legal pads," three for $1. It's where I go for birthday gift wrap and (sometimes) cards. And I get all my cat litter there. I've studiously avoided their cellophane packs of nuts from Thailand ever since I found a large insect part in one of them (!), but their Monet crackers (from Canada) are great for a party. In my popcorn days I liked Herr's Lite Popcorn, which they still sell at Dollar Tree. Big Lots isn't a dollar store, but I check it out when I can. Their inventory changes all the time, and if you're lucky you can find a great bargain. I get rug pads there, and scored a great latex pillow and some Calphalon kitchen towels once. I always check out their makeup aisle. I get most of my teas there (from England, Sri Lanka, etc.), and occasionally find good brands of health foods in their grocery aisle. I've gotten some great pickles, salad dressing, and other top branded food products there. I do look at the expiration dates. And in my chocolate days (around the same time as my popcorn days), Big Lots was a fine source! Susan...See Morewhat are your favorite dollar store items?
Comments (23)I definitely avoid edible items there unless it's a name brand and I verify expiration. I do buy spices there. Started going to Dollar Tree and bought a lot of stuff. Bought some of the LA Totally Awesome cleaner there to try out but you can get a bottle twice the size at Kmart for $2 so it's not the only place. I saw some people said in other places that they carry Greased Lightning and *that* is a great cleaner. Wanted to get some but they only had one bottle left and it was damaged. I won't buy aspirin or the like there, read too many credible tests that said they were inferior. I'd be very careful on foods. Dollar Tree items ($1 ea) I bought some salt-free seasoning to try out, eyeglass cases and pouches to use for various things. Some claim they sell umbrellas but the ones I've been to don't have them. Possibly it's seasonal. I bought pill organizers even a 14 day one that is $6-$10 most places. Decent quality dishpans that I like for organizing shelves and even using in the frig. Bullseye BBQ sauce, Blue Ice packs, binder clips, pens and some other office supplies, The Works brand cleaners are good too. I didn't need any but digital oral/rectal thermometers are $1. They even carry pregnancy tests and marijuana drug test kits if you need them. Got a couple of the windshield cleaners - the microfiber cloth on a stick. Combs, hairbrushes, mirrors, Peroxide, alcohol, kitchen utensils, etc. Bought a 3 pack of toothbrushes with the tubular containers for traveling. I bought some cell phone cases there and they have chargers too. I wanted to get some more wooden kitchen utensils but the quality was SO bad I passed. Splintery and just cheap so I said no. The aluminum disposable pans were cheaper at Walmart so I passed on those. Their paper products weren't a good value - so few sheets on a roll of toilet paper or towels, nope, no good. A couple of the big grocery stores in the area have $1 areas too that I make use of. One picnic we decided to bring a watermelon but didn't have a knife so we went to a dollar store and bought a serrated knife that worked fine for cutting it and I didn't care if it disappeared, which it did. Also picked up some aluminum trays to put meats in and used two, one to hold ice then one on top with the meat so it wouldn't get wet and it'd stay cool. Also buy serving spoons to use and toss when you are pretty sure you won't get them back from a pot luck. There's different "dollar" type stores. Dollar General and Family Dollar are all different prices so you need to watch your pricing. Dollar Tree is $1 for everything, and they take coupons too....See MoreSelf watering glasses! Comments (7)Su, I think you set up is wonderful ! Plants look beautiful !!!! And I love the three hanging baskets also!!!!! Dollar Tree/yard sales/thrift stores are all great possibilities for reservoir containers! Yay!!!! Speaking of reservoirs,,,I am experimenting with 2 Kcups with fresh cut leaves. I have put them right away on wicks. I usually put them in a snack baggie with a couple inches of soil, set on its short end. They do well, and then when I transplant and put them on their wick,,,,,well,, let's just say I have an extensive cemetery. sigh,,,RIP. SO,,,we are going to START on wicks. We'll see what happens with a little more consistency. I don't have room to "dome" everything after they come out of the baggies. And I am not transplanting when they are too little. But when you grow in a controlled "womb" and are thrust into the cold cruel world, well,,,, sigh. Anyway,,,I am all for recycling!!!! Rosie PS. We have been going to Fish Fry every Friday and I save my plastic glass and my cole slaw condiment cup/lid and YEP I take them home with me! Now multiply that by 3 (me, husband, grandson) then multiply that by 6 days of fish fries and WOW!!! AND if I go out to eat and they serve me in plastic,, well, yep! Same rules apply, they come home with me!!! Lots of containers!!!!! I can use them and better than ending up in the landfill !!!! Useful things!!!! Yay!!!!!...See Morestargazer lily bulbs at dollar general store
Comments (8)First, it is absolutely the wrong time of year to be finding lily bulbs for sale!! Started or flowering lily plants, yes; bulbs, no!! Lily bulbs are usually offered in spring and sometimes in fall. They never go fully dormant like many other bulbs do and do not store well at all. They should be planted as soon as they come into stores (March in my area). Lily bulbs available now will either be very dry and desiccated or soft and mushy....neither will grow to produce a flowering plant next season. What you are finding now at a dollar store are just some other retailers older cast-offs and not worth any amount of $$, no matter how cheap! Daffodils, tulips, crocus and other spring flowering bulbs should be available right around Labor Day in most parts of the country and can be planted as soon as the summer temps cool with the start of fall. You might also be able to find lily bulbs available then as well, depending on your location. In general, spring flowering bulbs will be available in stores in early fall....summer flowering bulbs (lilies, glads, dahlias, etc.) in late winter/early spring. Any bulbs you find for sale in midsummer will be stale and not very vigorous, if they even grow at all. And while it will be a pretty basic selection, the box stores (HD, Lowe's, etc.) and places like Walmart sell them pretty inexpensively if the budget is tight....See MoreRosie1949
