What would be gained by knowing a message is from a person who might be across town from you---but still far distant from everyone else. As far as local zones being somewhat the same as possibly a zone across the world, blame it on the weather....it ..and the fact that the world is tilted. The reason why our seasons are what they are is because the Earth doesn't sit level--its tilted. The reason why Florida grows plants that can grow nowhere else--yet other places have the same zone is because Florida is a peninsula---surrounded on three sides by water. But that said, a plant that grows well in southern B.C. may not thrive the same way the same plant would grow in another zone having the same number. You can take the girl out of the country....but you cant take the country out of the girl. A plant that grows in zone 5 Ontario may not thrive as well as the same plant grown in Denver, Colorado. A plant grown in zone 8 B.C. may not do as well as bringing it to Georgia and putting it into the ground there. Bring a plant out of zone 7 California and take it to the Niagara peninsula and you'd probably have a dead plant in no time. Yet, they have the same USDA identification to their zones. A plant is a plant is a plant....we sometimes utter. But a plant naturalized in B.C...such as a holly, bring it to Toronto and it wont grow near as well....if at all....See MoreConifer Treasury of the USA & Canada 2.0 2013

Comments (7)Well, this is good new and confussing as well. I tried very hard to send some gourd seeds to a friend in the US. First I had it in a bubble wrapped envelope and told them it was gourd seeds. They would not let me send it because they said that Vegetables and any part of can NOT be sent to the USA. (Gourds are veggies now? Hummm...news to me!) So, Ok I don't give up. I then go home and put the envelope in a box with a painted egg. Go back to the post office and say this is a painted WOODEN egg for a friend. Guess what? NOPE...not allowed to send it. WHY? Because the box was ( Are sitting? ) TO SMALL! WHAT? Yes, to small. It was the right height and width but 1" to short. I just about fell over. So, off I go once again and put the envelope and small box into bigger box. Long story short, my friend said she had never seen such wonderful packaging for gourd seeds. LOL Penny...See MoreShipping live plants from USA to Canada
Comments (5)Your friend in Ontario also has to get an import permit. You apply for these listing both the species you want to import and the state it's coming from. You also have to say where you are growing it, and if you intend to resell, where you sell to. You can list as many as you want on the form. It's something like 30 bucks, and the import is good for 3 years. While it seems a lot of bother, a lot of this is needed to slow down the spread of pests. Even within Canada there are limitations. I can't buy elm trees from Jeffries in Manitoba because Alberta is so far pretty much Dutch Elm disease free. For the last three years I couldn't bring firs in from BC. They are having a problem with adelgids on firs right now, and they want to keep it inside the BC boundary. Getting the phytosanitary certificate is a lot easier if the plants can be shipped bare root, or are grown in sterile soil-less media. phyto certs typically cost $25 to $40. Might be cheaper to mail your friend a gift certificate to a local nursery....See MoreUser
